Interesting data point. The camera was announced near the end of Jan
and starts shipping near the end of June -- roughly 5 months later.

Does that mean that cameras announced for PhotoKina around Oct 1 will be
on the market in Feb 2005 or so?

Well, I dunno where you are, but one of my ordinary readers had one two
months ago (or more) and had already shot loads of work and we
published it a month ago with his impressions. Ordered through his
dealer, in Wessex, Britain.

AFAIK this is probably the second batch being released. A lot of people had
already received (end of April?) the first batch after pre-ordering. January
29th, 2004 introduced with a press release, 3 months later the first product
shipped.

Does that mean that cameras announced for PhotoKina around Oct 1

Depending on what they introduce, Christmas time is more likely (or January
if year-end stocking levels are considered to be an issue).

Probably much sooner. Most Canon cameras are announced and released at
the same time. The 1D MII is their big flagship model and the announcement
was made early to head off the competition -- something they learned from
Nikon apparently.
I suspect the announcements at Photokina will be for a consumer body and
it will be ready to roll at that time the way the 10D and Rebel D etc were.
If I'm right - you read it here first
If I'm wrong -- you expected facts from the usenets?

California. So I guess that sets the interval back from 5 months to 3
months -- at least for some quantity of product. Likely different for
every camera, anyway.

I hope you are right, Tony. I have a 300D. I've been planning to
upgrade to a 10D (it has some features I could use), and make the 300D
my wife's, but the 10D is about due to be replaced and I'd rather wait
for that -- or whatever. We have a trip to Chile in late Dec and it
would be nice to take two dSLRs (and I'm all "lensed up" for two Canon
bodies already).

So I'll watch for announcements and get on a few lists when I see them :-)

You really want to be first? Ah, to sort out all the faults for the rest
of us.

Many thanks!

Apparently (recent msgs) there were some in users hands a couple of
months ago. So this may be the second batch.
