Default gimp and CMS

I'm using Gimp on Ubuntu

I have the color management turned on and have it configured to convert
to the Adobe 98RGB working space if a profile is embedded in the image
file, I have chosen an approximation for my monitor profile
(edit/preferences/color management)

but (file/new/advanced) does not include an option for a profile, just
RGB or grey scale

I will search for some images either in Adobe 98RGB or with some
embedded profiles, and standard datas (I see some B%W film data out
there http://registry.gimp.org/node/27897 )

shouldn't gimp allow for the file/new cube to be mapped to a working
space gamut, RGB or otherwise? I realize my choice of monitor
approximation may override any end goal, but I am just hacking with Yuv,
generic/convolution and grey scale in curves to get at UCR/GCR/UCA and
whatever else may come of it
