Default X-T2 Focus Stacking Experiment

Playing around with focus stacking/bracketing with my X-T2 after the v.4.10
firmware update.

As I said, this was an experiment, so composition does not come into this
discussion. Everything else is fair game.

I used my XF16mm f/1.4 set at f/2 @ ISO 200. Distance was about 12”. I used
a Godox TT350F flash. I took a focus bracket of 20 exposures with an interval
of 3 second to ensure the flash was functional for each exposure.

The 20 shots were imported into Lightroom CCC, and then opened as layers in
Photoshop CC. The layers were auto aligned, and then auto blended, and saved
back to LR to get this result.

It has been almost 10 years since I retired, and I don’t think there are
too many folks stalking me. If they show up I think I can handle things.
That, and there are a number of the old regulars here from the old SI days
who already know my name.

So..., was that intentional?
It was my acceptance that Adobe changed the sharing format for CC stored
files, and it wasn’t worth fighting, even though I have several methods of
sharing a little more anonymously.

For example Smugmug:

Technically it worked, but it makes the flowers look flat, to me.

How did the trip to (?) Africa go? I missed the report.

I did say experiment didn’t I?

I got back home in March. There were some photo ops, but the trip was really
an extended visit with old friends.
Here is a taste of some shots taken with the X-E3, starting with late night
at Schipol, ending with the Southern Suburbs side of Table Mountain.

OK, but I thought that feedback on the appearance would result from the
experiment. I think that a degree of out-of-focus effect helps to
provides depth information. Do you think using natural light might be
better, or is flash essential?

Ah, yes, I remember the Schipol shots, but hadn't seen the others. The
panos (or extreme landscape mode) shots convey a good feeling for the
place. Selecting the best 14 out of however many is always a challenge,
but it shows off your photographic skills very well. I hate it when you
see a post (or Tweet) pointing to "My trip to wherever" and the site
then shows all 200 unedited photos from just one day!

Thanks for that!

That may well be, but the experiment was to try the new focus bracketing
feature to create an artificially deep DoF from the blended stack. From that
narrow goal I think the experiment was successful within reason. The initial
focus point was on the end of the stamen on the orchid on the right as that
was closest. Then each of the subsequent 20 exposures changed focus
incrementally further from the initial focus point. Perhaps I could have
chosen a better subject, but the orchid was handy.

Do you think using natural light might be better, or is flash essential?

I used flash because the flowers facing the camera were back lit from the
window. That would have resulted in shaded blossoms, and if exposure was
corrected for those shadows the background would have been over exposed, and
washed out. Besides, I was also curious to see how well the flash could deal
with the 20 shot sequence. That said, natural light might have been better.

For the panos I used the in-camera pano feature which auto-stitches the image
as you pan across the scene.

Thanks. There were more decent shots of course, and I am well aware of the
painfully boring holiday slideshow. Those were enough.

Thanks for that!

Looks good. I tried focus stacking when Olympus updated the firmware of
the E-M1 II to allow it with the 12-100 and did this test:

That is pretty good.

Focus stacking is not something I see myself over using. I want to be
comfortable with the technique for those times it will be a useful solution
for troublesome subjects. I think it is best suited to macro, and some
product photography. I just find that something different like long exposure,
HDR, and IR photography is a way of continuing to learn about different
photography techniques. Each can be useful at different times, and sometimes
can be the best solution to a difficult shooting problem.

I have seen a few Youtube videos where focus stacking has been used for
landscape, and artchitecture photography, so that is next on my focus
stacking test mission.

It looks to me as if the entire subject, and only the subject was in
focus. If you are really interested in playing with macro work, try
these: They come with a diffusion dome, and rechargeable battery. Each
has variable light output, can be placed on a mini tripod, or be
magnetically attached. There is also a set of colored gels available. I
haven't had a chance to use mine yet, but plan to in the near future.
