it should work. itunes will automatically add it to books, which are
then synced to the ipad.

I haven't found any way of dragging and dropping a PDF to iTunes which
will result in the PDF showing up in 'Books' so that I can sync the
iPad to it.

click on the pdf, drag to itunes, let go.

itunes figures out the rest.

If that's what it's doing it's still thinking. It's been thinking for
two days now in some cases.

make sure that you enabled book syncing. it may be disabled.

I presume you are referring to enabling 'Sync Collections' in the
iBooks section of iPad's setup. Yes, that is enabled. My problem is
that I haven't found how to get the PDF in to iTunes to enable me to
sync it in the first place.

dragging should be sufficient.

click on the ipad (at the top) and then the book section (on the side).
this used to be less convoluted in itunes 11 and earlier.

I'm not sure quite what you are referring to there. Click on what (at
the top) and where are we when we have a book section on the side?

it

was a lot better in older versions of itunes, before they ****ed up
the interface:
http://libris.me/Images/screen14.png

either way, once you get the book panel, just select the books you want
and sync.

These are what I have currently:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Untitled-1.jpg and
and
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Untitled-2.jpg
neither of which explain why I have 14 books in the iPad, including

Please forget about iTunes, just load one of your PDFs into Dropbox on
your desktop.
Open Dropbox on your ipad.
Go to the fresh PDF in DB and from the 'Share' icon select 'Open In',
then select 'Copy to iBooks'.

iBooks should open and you and you should see at the top center the following:

This sort of thing might be best if you want to use something similar
to Windows:
http://www.igeeksblog.com/best-iphon...-manager-apps/

I stumbled across this when I got frustrated trying to help a friend
with her iphone. I think those apps turn the phone into something like
removable storage, which we Windows users are more familiar with.

I have bunch of stuff on the iPad which far exceeds what I have in
iTunes. I can delete it but it won't stay gone.

click the book icon at the top, which is likely hidden under the ...
menu icon (4th one). itunes 12 really ****ed up the interface.

https://support.apple.com/library/co...are/images/en_
US/mac_apps/itunes/el-capitan-itunes12-restore-device.png

that will bring up the books section of your library, then drag books
(pdf, epub, etc.) there and/or delete ones you don't want.

after that, click the device icon and sync.

did i mention that itunes realy ****ed up the interface?

itunes might be smart enough to accept book drags into other panels,
such as the sync panel, but i haven't tried it with books. it does
handle music & movies without explicitly being in the appropriate
section.

you can also configure which icons are shown and which require a dip
into the ... menu, so if you regularly work with books, you might want
to make it top level and aways visible.

What the !!! is the Menu icon? I can neither see nor identify such a
thing. Nor can I see it in the example you have posted.

https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/mac_apps/itunes/el-capitan-itunes12-restore-device.png

I now found what you might be calling the 'Menu' item have the PDFs in
to what might be the highest level. I've synced them down to the
'Books' under settings: I've synced them from there to 'Books' in 'On
My Device'. I am damned if I can get them from there into the iPad. I
think I will knock off for the night when I finish that.

after that, click the device icon and sync.

did i mention that itunes realy ****ed up the interface?

I seem to recall you said something like that some time ago. This is a
rare occasion when I will not argue with you. :-)

One of the strongest reasons for me using an iPad is the ability to
load in camera manuals as PDF files. I have four such files
totalling 42MB and cannot get them into the iPad.

Googling tells me:

(1) Drag and drop them into (somewhere) iTunes and then sync.
Doesn't work that I can see.

(2) Send them as attachments to an email addressed to yourself. Then
you can save them to 'iBooks'. I attempted this but the size of the
attachments have caused them to be rejected by the email system at
multiple levels.

(3) Use iCloud. Attempts to install iCloud are greeted by the
follwing Windows message:

"There is a problem with this Windows installation package.
A program as part of the setup did not finish as expected.
Contact your support personel or package vendor."

How else do I install these PDFs?

For your specific question, the answer is using iTunes to send them to iBooks.

But I use Dropbox for this purpose, I have a folder called "Manuals" which is
filled with PDF's and I can access them from my iPhone or iPad when I like.

I believe you can tell the Dropbox app to save them for offline access as well,
but I'm not sure, and I can't be bothered to check now

.... means 'more stuff'. click that.

but it looks like they changed things yet again and removed books.

try under the file menu, choose add to library...

there's still hope that itunes 13 will be less ****ed up.

Yup! I use Dropbox in exactly that way, and I copy from DB to iBooks in
both iPad and iPhone. I don't trouble myself with iTunes for that task.
