Quality from a one-light set-up

I'm looking into buying aa AlienBee 5400 Flash Unit with umbrella and
stand. As this will be the first light in my setup, I'm curious as to
what level of quality I will be able to produce with this as my sole
lighting source (outside of on-camera flash)? Over time I will be
purchasing additional lights. I realize that there are many other
factors that go into creating a high-quality image outside of light,
but just curious. BTW, I'm currently shooting with a Digital Rebel.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks- Chris

Many great photographs have been done using a single light source,
including the sun, windows hot lights and flashes. The quality you can
produce will be limited only by your knowledge, creativity and technique.
While I have several lights, I don't feel that being limited to only one is
a serious problem, it just limits some opportunities.

This plus a white reflector for fill will give excellent results.... classic
key + fill.

Also look at using a small flash as a rim light.

go to home depot, and get a few sheets of 4x8 foot white foam insulation
for reflectors. they will provide the fill light. you can cut them to
different sizes, like 4x4.
