Planning on buying Vista?

So what happens when it crashes like all versions of microsoft's operating systems due? What happens with a reinstall? You can reinstall it but it is saying you can only move that license to one new machine, after that you have to buy a new license. |

What happens with a reinstall? Depends on how the license is actually interpreted. I'm also worried about what happens when the hard drive fails. On the other hand I figure Win XP will be good for the next two or three years. After that, depending on what Adobe does with Photoshop and Dreamweaver, I'll either go to a Mac or convert totally to Linux. ---- Paul J. Gans |

Just kidding as I have no idea how the geniuses at M$ are going to deal with these situations. Well, that's what the license seems to say. Reinstall it once. I've often built my own machines (including the one I'm typing on right now) and I've *never* gotten WinXP installed properly the first time. It has often taken me three or four tries. And I've never violated the license terms even though I've used the same version on three different machines. (The two previous ones are now running Linux.) Looks like I won't be using Vista under its current conditions. ---- Paul J. Gans |

Well, that's what the license seems to say. Reinstall it once. No, from the way I read it, it means you can alter the hardware once, or transfer your license to a completely different computer once (read through the PDF). You can reinstall it on the same computer hardware as many times as you wish, just like XP, and activate it as many times as you want. There is no restriction there. You just can't move it around like you can with XP - I've had my copy of XP on three completely different computers in the last five years as I've upgraded but kept my original copy of XP. I won't be able to do that with Vista more than once, from what I gather. Which ticks me off. It's my license, I should be able to use it on any one computer I want. Just as I can drive as many different cars as I want with my drivers license, but only one at a time. The same should apply to software. If Micro$oft follows through with this licensing as I understand it, it will be nothing more than forced multiple-licensing for the same copy of software = money grab. I know the EU won't tolerate it, but the NA dolts probably will (Billy is in bed with them). Looks like I won't be using Vista under its current conditions. I'm not happy about the massive resources that Vista requires either. I don't like the sidebar toys, and I absolutely hate the spyware and security software that was slapped on top to make stupid customers feel warm and fuzzy. Vista is only slightly more secure than XP (uses the same 2003 server code base!), but I'm sure businesses will flock to it like kids to the candy floss at the circus. Not a happy camper... :-/ By the way, I love my camera. :-) |

Planning on buying Vista?
"Bill Crocker" wrote in message ... "Garrot" wrote in message .. . I was until I read this. http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/index.php?p=116p:// I don't see any compelling reason to go with Vista anyway. Same here. I wouldn't buy it for a year or so in any case, to give them time to get the inevitable bugs out. But I really don't see any reason to buy it at all. Nothing I've read about it is appealing, and this new licensing scheme just makes it less so. I think most users will be staying with Windows XP for a long time. Neil |

My XP box runs 24/7/365 and doesn't crash or get shut off till I need to make hardware changes. My DVD writer crapped out last year and I had to shut it off to replace it. Most people that "crash" an XP installation are using substandard hardware or an AMD based system. Rita Rubbish!! I have used AMD for my last three desktops and two servers with no problems whatsoever. As for substandard hardware, that's also rubbish. Whilst I agree a lot does exist, even top of the range hardware can fail. So you only restart for hardware changes? what about updates? |

Only a partial solution, since in reality there are apps for Win which have no counterpart in the OS X world. That's why I have both WinXP and OS X installed on this MacBook: Mostly use the latter, but occasionally I *need* WinXP. Re Vista: I hope not to upgrade from Xp to Vista. Time will tell. Phil |

Microsoft will do what they did with 95 and 98. They put well thought out unnoticed obsolescence factors into legitimate XP updates and will force you to eventually go to Vista. If that happens I'll just move back to Linux. I've used a recent distribution of Linux and it worked very well! It has everything I'll ever need for what I do. It has reached a point of being very user friendly, and they even have a GUI that is a clone of XP, so you feel more comfortable if necessary. Bill Crocker |
