Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 Preview
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 Preview
http://www.dpreview.com/articles/sonydscr1/ This is a most interesting camera! It uses the same sensor as in many DSLR cameras (21.5 x 14.4 mm) and so offers much better noise performance, but has the live preview we expect from a ZLR and the lower acoutsic noise and more compact size you can get without all the moving parts (mirror) present in a DSLR. 24 - 120mm (equivalent) zoom. Is this the start of a new line of cameras? Is this the camera for you? David |

It is finally The Camera for taking peformance shots of classical guitar solo concerts, among other things. (Try to do this with an SLR in the middle of "Requierdo el Alhambra", and the mirror slap noise will be enough to get you banned from classical guitar concerts worldwide for life...) And the DOF geeks will have an entirely new toy to play with, one where you can frame the images without having the eye at the eyepiece. (They might consider getting a 67mm ND filter, though. Minimal ISO 160 and maximal shutter speed 1/2000 means that you won't reach f2.8 without it in bright light.) Is this the start of a new line of cameras? I definitely hope so. But one never knows. I mean, I've been waiting for half a year for Fuji to put their F10 sensor in a decent camera. What's the idea of having a great sensor if you only put it in a camera that sucks big time? But no sign of it. Instead, they make a new 5MP suoperzoom with a tiny wee sensor, and claim the same ISO sensitivity as the F10 in the specs. We'll see when it comes out, but I'm not too hopeful. Is this the camera for you? Not as my sole camera. It would complement my Panny FZ20 nicely (thanks, btw, for recommending it), but then I have to consider if I really need a complement camera which will cost something like twice as much as the camera I have. And I would like IS/AS on it, even if it just goes to 120mm. Having image stabilisation is highly addicitive, and when Canon apparently feels that consumers would want an image-stabilised dSLR lens with field of view equivalent to a FF 27-136 mm, why shouldn't Sony have it on a 24-120? I do hope Sony isn't into Fuji's general mantra of "We have higher sensitivity, so we don't need IS/AS". That's plain silly. Of course both is better. Jan B=F6hme |
