Ilford and eBay insanity
OK, I need a new set of vc filters since I cut up my old set for the B22 I
replaced with a Beseler 45. Go to eBay right. Put bids on three different sets and this last one goes for over $35. Go to Freestyle: 25 count box of Ilford RC glossy 8X10, ilford book, and 6 inch filter set: $29. Could make money buying from Freestyle and selling on eBay.. -- Regards, Dewey Clark http://www.historictimekeepers.com Restorations, Parts for Hamilton M21s, Products for Craftsmen Makers of Historic Timekeepers Ultrasonic Clock Cleaning Solution |

It's really important to know if the price offered/available in a auction is a fair price to pay and resist a temptation to buy something that you "gotta have". A rule of an auction is that, with a very few exceptions, another one will come along. It can be like trying to stop putting quarters into a slot machine but, remember, try to bid with sense... |

One of the worst examples I have seen was an eBay auction of a chemical listed by Aircraft Chemicals. The vendor invited potential bidders to look at its on-line catalogue of chemicals. The final eBay price for the chemical exceeded the price at wich the same chemical could have been bought from Artcraft by phone or email. How can anyone be that stupid? Francis A. Miniter |

When bidding, I decide the maximum I want to pay and if I win, I win, but if I'm outbid, I loose. I won't try to outbid that bidder, because it's more than what I think the item is worth. However, there are some people where winning is more important than cost. Or perhaps "having" is worth any amount. That's why auctions can be so profitable. Could make money buying from Freestyle and selling on eBay.. I'm sure some sellers do. -- Stefan Patric NoLife Polymath Group |

Or perhaps "having" is worth any amount. That's why auctions can be so profitable. Some people just don't know any better. Some people see the first bid and think it's a great deal so they bid. A good reason not to bid early. Some people are buying for other reasons. Shipping from say B&H to me would add a fair bit. So it's some times cheaper to pay more for the item and less for shipping. The worst times IMHO are Christmas. Lots of people buying for others. The beginning of the school year. Lots of stuff being bought for students with the parents credit card. Nick |

[went on ebay for $35 for filters alone] I've been trying to make sense of this type of stupidity myself Old, old saying: "There are two infinities in the universe: God's patience and man's stupidity." When bidding, I decide the maximum I want to pay and if I win, I win, but if I'm outbid, I loose. Same here, with the caveat that I place the bid 5 seconds before the auction closes. That turns it into a blind auction, probably the fairest type of auction going (for the buyer). The worst times IMHO are Christmas. The best time #1, IMHO, is after Christmas: folks selling to pay the Christmas bills by getting rid of cameras/lenses/darkrooms that were replaced by the gift of a new digital trinket made from recycled milk jugs and beach sand. Time number #2 is the run-up to April 15. [US income tax day for the int'l crowd] -- Nicholas O. Lindan, Cleveland, Ohio Consulting Engineer: Electronics; Informatics; Photonics. I agree with this analysis; however, I've seen discussions in which people get very angry at this "sniping" behavior. They try to present their point of view as being logical, but I've just never gotten it. I suspect it goes back to the "gotta have it" sort of mentality, or perhaps a fundamental misunderstanding of how eBay bidding works. -- Rod Smith, http://www.rodsbooks.com Author of books on Linux, FreeBSD, and networking |
