Olympus launches pro lens beyond the means of 99.999999% of m4/3rds buyers

$7500.00. Admittedly a minor price in the Canon-Nikon long lens landscape, but a huge amount for people who often buy into m4/3rds because generally, it's been less expensive than larger sensor systems. This is like the 300mm f/2.8 Olympus launched when the 4/3rds system came about. Why would they do this? No one knows, but in addition to the 150-400mm lens, they are offering a 100-400mm lens that's around $1500.00 and looks very competent for the price.
Admittedly, Olympus's 300mm f/4.0 is a benchmark lens from a sharpness standpoint, it's optical quality is otherworldly. It's about $3000.00. So likely this new zoom is similar.

But exactly a lens like this makes most sense for m4/3. Long
tele lenses for wildlife is the area where the m4/3 system has
the biggest advantages compared to full frame systems: twice the
range, more depth of field even with a relatively large
aperture, portability (size/weight) where it matters - the
wildlife pro who spends hours trekking in the jungle cannot
carry heavy gear with him/herself.

And with the 2x teleconverter you get the same field of view as
a 2000mm full frame lens. In case you need that range, it's
available.
For instance one time I was in Malaysian Borneo, in the Danum
valley. We suddenly spotted an orang utan on a tree, hundreds of
metres away from us. With a 300mm APS-C lens (450mm FF
equivalent) the orang utan only covered a small part of the
frame. Had I had this Olympus lens and the teleconverter, I
could have taken a much better picture (the animal covering
about 50% of the frame).
