Default 70-300mm nikon lens options

Hello, Finally made the change to digital and have a D70. One of the lens
I often used with my film camera is the
AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D. I was quite happy with that lens but now I
have been told by a couple of friends that I should
replace the lens and get a AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G Zoom-Nikkor. I have
had a look at this reviews on this lens and I
like the idea of the VR but are there any other reasons that anyone can
think why I should replace my lens? A few times I have heard people say
that lens made for film cameras will not give sharp images on digital in
the saame way as a lens made for a digital camera.
Any suggestions welcome.

Mike

The lenses are completely different, not only in VR. The VR version is a
very nice new lens. In contrary the old 70-300 is a very bad lens.
