Still, they all seem capable of excellent pictures, and at the end
of the day (phone camera aside) it's far more likely to be the
camera you have with you.

Before you dismiss phone cameras, take a good look at a recent,
higher-end model.Â* For many purposes they are quite adequate, with
*zoom being about the only thing lacking*.Â* That's now my "the camera
you have with you".

I have a 'zoom' facility on my iPhone!

This might help you:Â* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z75KbKhOVJI

Digital zoom doesn't provide the range or quality which I need.

Sorry - I got the impression from your statement that you didn't know
that the facility existed. No worries! :-)

No problem.

I actually did some tests early on (~2000) to compare digital zoom with
simple interpolation, and interpolation won for picture quality.
Digital zoom may provide better focussing and exposure though.

What I have been impressed with recently are all the advances in the
Google Pixel 2 & 3 camera apps, with low-light, good zoom (reasonable
quality at 2:1, that is), and single lens bokeh. Not only do these work
well, there are good articles about how they work, too:

Clever stuff!

Digital zoom

it's optical on most recent iphones.

doesn't provide the range or quality which I need.

Yes, I've got an iPhone XS - but even that only has 2x optical - nothing
like the reach of these super-mini-zooms.

Very similar.

higher MP does not always better IQ. It could also increase image noise.

...and soon to arrive, the GFX 100S, and it will be less noisy that the GFX
50S.

If the sensor is properly designed, I agree. That;s why I used the word
"could."

Well OK, but there is a "sweet spot" where more image info is
desireable, and noise is not yet a problem.

The HX80 is nowhere near the point where noise is an issue,
in nearly all shots.
