Is there an easy way to stop this light scatter ghosting in all my photos & videos of engine valves?
Is there an easy way to stop this light scatter sparkling in all my photos
& videos of engine valves. What specifically is causing all the ghosting and sparkling? I'm using just a shop light and a mobile phone to video (without flash) and photograph (with and without flash) an engine problem where all the photos have this shiny glare no matter what angle I put the light or phone with respect to the valves - and whether or not I use flash. https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay1.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay2.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay3.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay4.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay5.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay6.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay7.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay8.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay9.jpg.html https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368...bay10.jpg.html The original thread is here, where it also contains video with the same problem, but the photos above show the problem enough. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1181089 Is there an easy way to stop this light scatter ghosting in all my photos & videos of engine valves. |

It looks to me as though your problem lies with the shop light. You will never solve this problem photographically by using such undiffused harsh lighting, but that is easily solved. You could go the expensive route by using specialized photographic diffusers, or reflectors, or you can adapt your shop light by placing a diffuser sheet between the light and your subject. A search on Amazon for light diffuser, or diffuser sheet will expand those options. Here is more for you to read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffuser_(optics) https://diffuserspecialist.com/fluor...products/flat- sheet-light-diffuser-panels/ http://www.instructables.com/id/10-Minute-Light-Diffuser/ https://www.inventables.com/technologies/light-diffuser-film-rolls -- Regards, Savageduck |

This isn’t a problem that polarizer filters will fix. This is a case where a light diffuser, or reflector is needed. -- Regards, Savageduck |

This did not appear to be an OS troll. but yet a troll nonetheless. |

I think you mean cams rather than valves. It looks to me as though the highlighted parts give rise to a strak of light at an angle to the frame of the image. In some of the shots (e.g. bay 10) streaks can be seen emenating from highlights other than the cams. I suspect the problem may be due to a smear on the camera lens. I suggest you try it with another camera. -- Regards, Eric Stevens |

Regardless of whether the poster is a troll, I see it as a legitimate question. I think that your answer is a good response to a real problem. I see the solution is a "diffuser" but what's the "problem". What I mean by that is why does the light look like it's raining? For whatever reason, it's like "sleet" at a 45 degree angle. Where is all that "sleet" of light coming from? And why always a 45-degree angle? I assumed that some "physics" principle is being invoked. No matter how I held the camera, I still got a 45-degree "sleet" of light. Take this one example from far away: https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay4.jpg.html Compared with this at 90 degrees: https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368..._bay6.jpg.html Compared with this at a closeup: https://www.turboimagehost.com/p/368...bay10.jpg.html All have this "sleet" of light at the same angle. Why the 45-degree "sleet" angle in /all/ the photos? I realize the /solution/ is a diffuser but what's the physics problem? Is there a physics principle that causes the always 45 degree sleet? |
