While I don't place pixel count first in choosing a camera, 24MP or
thereabouts works well enough for me. Ergonomics comes first and I like
the feel of Canon cameras.

5D Mark IV, 30MP
6d Mark II, 26MP
M5 (mirrorless), 24MP

Those are Canons, of course, but since this seems to be mostly about
Nikon, I should say that I have a Nikon D100, 6MP, that was my first
DSLR* and that I keep because I like to use the excellent 60mm Micro
Nikkor from time to time. No one ever looked at a Flickr photo or a
print from that camera and said "Gee, too bad it's only 6 megapixels."

*But not my first digital camera. That was the 1997 Kodak DC120, "the
first point-and-shoot megapixel quality digital camera under $1,000."

Alfred Molon:
My brother bought a D600 a while ago, then barely used it. Too big &
heavy, too hard to use it (he never managed to learn how to use it).

What was he using before? When I "upgrade" it tends to be in
evolutionary steps rather than revolutionary leaps; 5D Mark III to 5D
Mark IV, e.g. Not much to learn. In any case, even if a new camera is
very different to what one was using before, it is not necessary to
learn all of the features on day 1!

I have to say that the Mark IV with battery grip and, say, a 70-200
Ÿ2.8 is a heavy beast, but I generally use it on a really good tripod
and I have the lighter-weight cameras listed above, plus iPhone, for
walkabout.

Understood. I have a lot of good Nikon glass. Nikon lenses. So far from
what I have head, only my 105 macro would be able to take advantage of
the increased pixel density. My concern is that I might get distortions
from my other lenses. I will see and eventually run some tests myself. I
can always spend the money.

A little food for thought. How many megapixels do you need?

Utter nonsense. How can I tell anything about image size and resolution
by looking at poorly exposed, miniaturized jpegs on a web page?

It is after all just the author expressing his opinion, as many blog authors
do, and the jpegs presented are fine for viewing in the context of the blog,
rather than intense pixel peeking. Hardly “miniaturized jpegs”, but sized
for online blog viewing.

I posted it as an article which might be of some interest to folks who
subscribe to r.p.d, or a.p as it is far more on topic than much of what
passes through these photo NGs these days.

True, but surely you knew it would provoke this type of discussion. In
an ideal world the discussion would be without personal insults, and
would not devolve into a tool war.

I think that insults and tool wars seem to be the raison d'etre for
some people.

At time it does seem that way.

Well, according to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-_...t-hand_traffic

the French switched from left to right already in 1792 - quite a while
ago...

But the Swedes switched in living memory. I recall having seen TV news;
at the appointed time (noon?) all drivers simply went to the other side
of the road. A Swedish friend told me that it wasn't very traumatic;
Swedes are pretty well traveled and very many of them had experience
driving on the right.

Sweden might not have been very traumatic with their switch, but Argentina
had a transition from left to right which came as a surprise for the public.

I visited Buenos Aires in 1963 on a trip with my parents, and we were regaled
with tales of the 1945 switch from left to right, which came from legislative
decree, and immediate, overnight implementation. The switch came days after a
coup, and establishment of a military dictatorship before Peron took over in
1947. In 1963 it was still a tender spot in Argentinean memory. Many longed
for the days when they drove on the left.

Apparently that switch in 1945 resulted in multiple daily accidents, and
daily deaths. It took them years to get the street signage changed, and some
of the old signage was still in place in 1963. The day of the switch is
recognised today as “Road Safety Day” in Argentina.

They had some other odd rules of the road which I won’t get into here.

Which sign do you follow?
