What freeware is recommeded to grab a still frame from an mpeg which I
originally made on my digital camera?

The media app you use to view the mpeg should have a screen
capture feature (eg: Media Player Classic). If not, Google for
a tool like MWSnap.

Personally I use a payware program 'VideoReDo' for doing it.

try Avidemux - good for .mpg, .mov etc.

http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Go to the frame you want, then in the file - save menu there are options
to save as .bmp or .jpg

try Avidemux - good for .mpg, .mov etc.

or Virtualdub+mpeg plugin by fourcc

MWsnap and screenshots may no fokken good cos XP uses hardware overlay.
Unset hardware accel.
