Default Canon 7 MP Digital ELPH??

Hi,

Several months ago, looking for a good digital camera I could use on
vacation that was small enough to be easy to carry, I purchased a
Canon S500 Digital ELPH and really like it.

Today, I discovered that Canon as released a S70 that is a 7 megapixel
version of what I'll call it's "S40 LINE" with the larger metal body
style they have used for years. In fact, I have owned an S40 an S45
and an S50 and went to an ELPH because I felt those other cameras took
great photos, but were a bit bulky.

Does this S70 release mean Canon is heading toward 7 megapixel with
it's new cameras? What are my chances of seeing a 7 megapixel Digital
ELPH released soon? Nothing is mentioned on Canon's site, but I would
think they have one in the works. I would assume it would be called
"Canon Digital ELPH S700".

Any ideas?

Almost certainly, one will be in the works. It would be uncharacteristic of
Canon to miss out on the big 7mp scam with it's Elph/Ixus series.

I am curious, what makes you call this "the big 7mp scam"??

I don't agree with Martin's characterization of 7mp
as a "scam", but perhaps he means to point out that
if you're printing full frame at 8x10 or less, you
probably won't see any benefit from 7mp over 5mp.

I did a comparison a month or so ago (Search on
google for:

"3, 4, 5, 8 MP 8x10 printout comparison - Long"

I found no significant perceptible difference on
8x10 prints between 5 and 8 mp images.

I think the only benefits you would get from going
from 5 to 7 mp are if you make prints larger than
8x10, or if you need to crop out and separately
print smaller portions of an image (admittedly a nice
thing to be able to do.)

I sell a lot more cameras than A3 printers- and i'd say 16x12" is the only
way you'd spot the difference between a 5mp and 7mp. The price difference
between the Sony P120 and forthcoming P150 will be about £100UK, and most
P150 buyers will effectively be throwing those extra £££s away.

And the JPEG samples from a 7mp compact look horrible at 100% anyway.
