Traveling with a camera

Ignore the swags that try to make you believe an airport scanner will
damage electronic devices. My personal risk assessment is always
protect what's valuable, and that changes, depending on what part of the
journey the risk is encountered. My photo gear is carry-on for the
outbound leg, and the used memory cards are carry-on for the return leg.
Never, NEVER lay anything on the walk-through scanner belt until
you're prepared to walk through the scanner - clean with no delay. The
preferred intention here is to arrive on the other side before your
carry-on stuff does, so you'll be there to collect it before someone
else does. When walking through the scanner bridge, DO NOT look at the
TSA person - they're not looking at you, they're watching the scanner
panel - you look at your stuff instead because nobody else is. If you
get stopped for a secondary hand-wand inspection, your stuff is now
lying about unwatched and beyond your reach. A perfect invitation for a
thief. And that's a far greater risk to loss than any scanner.
