What are your top reasons for shooting raw?

That is exactly what it *can't* do.

The value of any give pixel in an RGB image was derived
from at least a 3x3 matrix, and maybe a 9x9 matrix.

True enough. My goal would not be an exact re-creation of a RAW file, just
a good approximation. I'll let you know if I do this.

If possible, it would almost be useful for file compression, compared to
a color TIF anyways. BTW raw files also have a little extra border,
which it's possible to extract using dcraw, presumably there's some
possible problems there but I've tried it and didn't notice anything
obvious.
