Looking for inputs good or bad on the Tamron f2.8 when used on a Nikon body
(D80). What are the pros and cons, personal experience with Tamron, build
quality, optical performance...

I own the Tamron SP 17-50 f/2.8 and I use it a lot as a general-
purpose lens on my D200. It takes great photos.

Pros:
* barrel is plastic but it's a very good quality plastic
* very usable at 17mm f/2.8 and superb at 24-50mm and f/5.6
* inexpensive
* very lightweight for a lens in this class
* focusing is very precise on the D200

Cons:
* autofocus is a bit loud
* no SWM
* some ghosting when you shoot into a light source
* occasional corner light fall-off at extreme wide focal lengths, but
it may not be the lens that's at fault

Overall, it's a great lens for the money. Really, really sharp for a
zoom.

Thanks, I passed the information to my friend. I told her to do her own
tests on a tripod at different apertures and focal lenghts just to insure it
is up to her standards but getting a first hand experience froman actual
user helps a lot.

No problem.

Here's some photos I took a couple of weeks ago:

The above photos were all taken at 17mm. Below are some photos at
different focal lengths:
