Note that OP cross-posted to a bunch of groups, may account
for some of the confusion. My take? Grain is OK--it is part of what makes a photo look like a photo. More important to use the right tool for the job at hand, I shoot and prefer 120 for black and white most of the time but some of my favorite images were shot on 35mm; have had as many medium and large format cameras as 35mm--among my first serious cameras were a 3.25x4.25 Speed Graphic, an Ikoflex, and a 120 folder. I tried shooting what everyone else shoots using what everyone else was using. I got a satisfactory full frame image of the moon using stacked tele-converters on a 500mm lens, shot some sports, weddings and landscapes all fine and technically adequate. None of it "fun" enough for me to stick with it. Ignore anyone that posts: I tried "x" once, it was crap, they haven't adequately explored "x" with one trial. I also use HC-110 for almost everything except TMax films (TMax developer) and also use ACU-1. I process 99% of my film on a Uniroller and prefer developers that suite my hardware. darkroommike Jean-David Beyer wrote: Nicholas O. I don't get much grain at all We once had a shouting match on this subject when a member of the LF group "obviously assumed 4x5" and the one from r.p.e.35mm "obviously assumed 35mm". Needles to say each was soon convinced the other had lost touch with reality. It is a good idea to mention the film size [and sometimes print size] when debating grain. Well, yes. But this is the rec.photo.equipment.large-format board, and it would not make sense to assume people would bother to get an adapter to use 35mm film in a large format camera. I have a roll film holder for my 4x5 cameras, but I never use it. |

So I'm guessing he's using one of those formats.
