Pronunciation of Nikon
Just curious about this... Everyone I've ever met pronounces it Nick-On, but
today was listening to "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon, and finally worked out the lyrics to the line "I've got a Nikon camera". The thing that had initially confused me about the lyrics was his pronunciation - Nigh-kon. I'm wondering if this is the normal american pronunciation? Justin (annoyed that Kodak Australia took Kodachrome away) |

If cornered, they'll pull out an american dictionary article that claims, without any evidence or docuemented usage, that it was really a British usage so they can wash their hands of it. Don't be misled. Justin (annoyed that Kodak Australia took Kodachrome away) The *******s just took tech-pan away, too. B |

What I want to know is how the Japanese pronounce it. Scott |

Justin (annoyed that Kodak Australia took Kodachrome away) When the "brand" was introduced many years ago by the Japanese, they sought to capitalize on the best camera brand at the time-- Zeiss-Ikon. So the pronounciation was similar-- "eye-con." Dan'l. |

Justin (annoyed that Kodak Australia took Kodachrome away) The Japanese pronounciation is Knee-cohn The American's pronouce it Nighk-on Of course, Americans pronounce Chile as chilly instead of 'Chee-layh,' 'karaoke' (kah-rah-oh-keh) as 'carry-okee' and 'sake' (sah-keh) as sack-ee. Of course there is always hara kiri (hah-rah kee-ree) which gets turned into harry carry, and kami kaze (kah-mee kah-zeh) which gets turned into kama kazi (kah-mah kah-zee) No matter what 'you' chose to call Nikon, someone will say you are wrong. ) It's probably best to stick with the old saw of 'when in Rome...' otherwise people won't know what you are talking about!
