substances?

Well, yes.

Silicon is an element and pure crystals can be made of it. IIRC, they are a
charcoal grey, but they may have been treated with something before I saw one.

Isn't silicone a marketing word relating to
those rubber-like caulking compounds? Do they
have anything to do with silicon?

Not exactly. Silicones are chain compounds a bit like hydrocarbons. But
where hydrocarbons have a chain of carbon atoms with stuff stuck on, such as:
H H

H-C-C-O-H (ethanol)

H H

Silicones have alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, thus:

H H

H-Si-O-Si-O-H (I do not know if this one exists.)

H H

I believe you can also make ring compounds with silicones, like benzene with
carbon.

My counter-top water distiller has a power
switch that shuts off when the temperature
goes too high (ie, when it boils dry). It
contacts the interior boiling tank by means
of a glob of white grease I take to be
silicon grease.

More likely to be a silicone grease.

Aren't silicones those silly marketing silly
cones they used to depict on TV during
(silly) commercials for shaving products?

Tubes of silicone sealant or caulking
material are commonly available here at the
Home Depot Ironmongers.

A friend of mine calls that business "Home Despot."

Obviously yes. The German language distinguishes between "Silizium",
that's the chemical element and the material semiconductors are made of,
and "Silikon", the rubbery goo sold for a fortune by Jobo.

Silicon is a semi-conducting quasi-metallic element.
Silicon oxides make up most rocks, sand, glass etc.

Silicone is a compound based on silicon, such
as silicone oil/grease or silicone rubber.

Silicon is chemically similar to carbon and so
the same spectrum exists for carbon compounds:
diamond - coal - oil - rubbers and plastics.

The white silicone grease used for electronic
heatsinks has aluminum oxide powder added to
it to help conduct heat. Don't use it as a
lubricant, aluminum oxides are a component of
sandpaper.

I have seen grease and sealer marked both silicon
and silicone. It doesn't really matter, hard to
get sand confused with rubber.
