Canon strikes again!!

Dpreview: "Canon has detected a problem with the recently released
firmware for its 5D Mark II DSLR. With v2.0.3, sound recording will not
work if a manual record volume is used in the C1/C2/C3 custom settings
modes. The company is currently working on a firmware update to address
the issue and meanwhile requests users to change the sound recording
setting to Auto in the custom modes."

It seems a rather limited scenario, and the workaround is easy.

Sheesh, already yet.

Is it just me or is there something of the twilight zone when an SLR
camera has an "audio bug"?

Perhaps I am still not used to the idea that an SLR camera now does
video and sound.

I must be getting old.

DSLRs are slowly but relentlessly copying all the features that have been
in P&S cameras for over a decade. First they complained that their DSLRs
had an LCD display for exposure information. Then they laughed and
complained about the uselessness of LCD live-view on P&S cameras for years.
How nobody in their right mind would want that crap on their DSLRs. Then
they saw the benefits of live-view. Now DSLR buyers won't buy one without
it. Slowly but surely you will spend your money on models that mimic all
the features of P&S cameras. Because, in reality, DSLR buyers demand that
their cameras do all the work for them. They want a DSLR with a one-click
talent button on them. The only reason they buy a new camera is in the
hopes that it will turn them into a better photographer. (Never realizing
that that will never turn them into a decent photographer.) DSLR buyers are
always more of P&S snapshooters than P&S owners who know how to use every
manual setting available on their P&S cameras. Some of them even using the
revolutionary CHDK software on them. Taking the manual features of any
cameras ever made to a whole new level. So much so that learning to
properly use all the features of a CHDK equipped P&S camera is about a 2-3
month task for any experienced manual-only pro SLR photographer.

The only things that are left to change on DSLRs is putting on a
high-quality super-zoom that never needs changing, ditching that optical
viewfinder with limited uses (no information and alignment-grid overlays,
no shutter-speed preview, no useful DOF preview, no amplification in
low-light situation, no white-balance preview, no manual-focus zoom for
precision focusing, etc., etc.) and getting rid of that crippling and
limiting shutter and mirror. Then you'll all whine that it doesn't have the
latest features and latest sensors that are always put into P&S cameras
years before they are always adopted for DSLRs. The only thing that is
keeping your DSLR cameras from getting better and more functional is YOU,
with your silly need to guard an outmoded and photo-opportunity-crippling
past.

"Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of
the shore." - Andre' Gide

I'm surprised you're not all whining why there's no latch on your DSLRs to
open the back where the film goes. You should be complaining about it
lacking a film-winder too.

You're guarding an almost dead design. May it and you soon rest in peace.
Putting all of you all out of everyone's misery. Those that fail to embrace
the change will either be left behind or be dragged along kicking and
screaming.

Go ahead, kick and scream some more. It's highly amusing.

Time for me to go out and take some more shots. This early spring is
affording some great opportunities of birds and other animals that haven't
migrated yet at their usual time of the year.

It's very handy, Chris, to be able to capture a snippet of video without
changing camera, and, of course, with the large sensor, high ISOs, and
large aperture lenses, a DSLR can capture video at light levels well below
those where the P&S has faded to black....

Cheers,
David

It's a pretty "narrow" area for a bug from what I read. Workaround is
to leave certain audio modes in auto.

If you don't use video much, I'd just ignore it.

Can you go back to the prev. v?

Funny. I have a P&S camera that allows me to take videos in the total
darkness by IR illumination alone. It also comes in handy to take hand-held
IR photos and videos in daylight with a real-time IR preview in the
viewfinder for focusing and composing. You sure don't know much about P&S
cameras do you. It's a wonder you even feel safe typing the monicker "P&S"
to describe them considering you know absolutely nothing about them, as
you've just proved--AGAIN.
