Size of FlashCard

I am purchasing a Canon Digital Rebel for the office....

Does anyone know how many pics can be stored in a 256 meg flashcard vs
the 1 Gig flashcard ???

This is assuming the camera set at it's maximum quality....

There's no precise answer because the file sizes vary depending on the image
data structure and the storage mode you select, but if you shoot RAW mode at a
low ISO you will likely get files around 5-7 MB ... say 6 MB average, which
means you'd get about 40 or so on the 256 MB card and 160 or so on the 1 GB
card. Higher ISO RAW files will be a bit larger.

If you shoot jpeg mode then the files are much smaller and you'll get maybe 3x
as many shots per card, more if you shoot with the smaller jpeg options.

On a 256 I get 70 pictures. I put and 512 in and I get 142 go figure.
The 256 is a scandisk and the 512 is a lexar 512 80x.

On a 256 I get 70 pictures. I put and 512 in and I get 142 go figure.
The 256 is a scandisk and the 512 is a lexar 512 80x.

Well, assuming that by 'maximum quality', you mean RAW+Large, coarse
JPEG, (that being what I shoot on my 10D), I find that the average image
file size is 5-6MB, for about 70-80 shots on a 512MB card, or around 160
shots on a 1GB card. Extrapolating from that, you should be able to
expect a minimum of 30 shots on a 256MB card, or dramatically more if
you're only shooting highest-quality JPEGs, rather than RAW.

Rebel from an electronics standpoint.

the 256MB card gives me about 80 pictures on highest quality JPEG. I
don't shoot RAW so I don't have any idea on that one.

The 1G card will hold just under 400 pictures.

These numbers are scene dependent so the variability of the 1G card is
higher than thatof the smaller card since there is a larger variety of
scenes.


Oh, BTW, I regularly use 4 256M and a 1G card on a single day on a
single battery with the 10D for football pics of my kids teams.

Its about 1MB per MP at full resolution.

Canon claim its 3MB per top quality JPEG and 7MB per RAW. Do the maths.
