Nikon D3x buyers beware - D700x already in prototype
same lowlight performance (like the D3x, iq is no good above 1600 ISO
Wrong! D3x will be quite good above 1600 ISO. Not as D700/3, but not far behind. People has misunderstand a simple thing: D3x is made exclusively for studio/fashion/landscape high quality photography. It will be irony from Nikon if has extend the range to 25.600 ISO. What will be the purpose of a superhigh resolution photo in low quality (noise/dynamic/color) even if was about equal to D3 in 1:1 comparison NOT by pixel, but by picture size. D3 that can be used in situations that the photo, as documentary of an event should be taken at any quality cost, SHOULD be able to raise to 25.600 for real practical reasons. Rising the studio oriented high-def above 1.600 would be hypocritical and not honest, an empty marketing trick. And Nikon does not do such things. Nikon respects their clients and does not try to impress them with empty features. From the other hand, D700x (or whatever) will be a more “generic use” as the users who will buy it, probably will use it as an all purpose camera. Those who mostly want fast low light photos will buy D700 and those who are mostly landscape or high-def lovers will buy D700x., but both will be able to enter the other’s area with little loss. For that, the D700x should raise to 3.200 ISO (or more) with Hi1 + Hi2 paying a penalty in noise. But don’t worry, it will be not excessive. As a proof: The D300/D90 in 3.200 ISO with smooth balanced light of 5.000 K can produce excellent photos and the noise is very well controllable, almost only luminance, like a smooth powder, like a good 200 ISO film. If you uses as a base the D300 sensor augmented by 2.25 in surface to equal the surface of the D3x sensor, you will have 27.22 Mpix. So the imaginary new sensor will be as good as D300’s sensor in 1:1 pixel to pixel comparison, but in 1:1 by picture size comparison will be much better do to smaller noise pixel size. So this imaginary 27,22 Mpix camera could even go a little higher in ISO, almost 5000 with similar optical impression of noise as D300 at 3.200 ISO. The D700x will be 24,5 Mpix, so I could say that I expect it to equal at about 6.400 ISO the 3.200 ISO performance of the D300. (In reality, I expect D700x to be almost as good in noise as D700 till an area around 5.000 ISO and after that, it will becomes worst). I hope that the above are understandable, as my English are not so good. That will probably mean the end of Canon DSLRs forever. We don’t want this. We want both to produce the better cameras possible. This makes the competition to improve the cameras faster and the prices to go down. So we want at least two to four healthy and robust companies to fight in the field. -- Dimitris M |
