What is a decent resolution from a 4 mp camera?

from clubphoto.com from my 4 mp Canon G3.

I don't know what your question means, and I suspect you may not
either. The resolution you can get from a camera *between* 5 and 3
megapixels would presumably be 4 megapixels -- at least if we limit
ourselves to integers.

Optimal resolution is the one from the camera capacity and is known as
optical or physical resolution, the highest number of pixels the camera can
create. This amount is not enough for large print but it can be resampled or
interpolated, the terms that mean using software to create extra required
new pixels base on the physical ones. The quality of the image then depends
on the software used and the ways the camera creates the optical or physical
pixels. Typically, a decent camera of 4MB pixels with good photo taking
skill can produce very good quality 16 x 20" color print or even larger.

I assume you're asking about *MAXIMUM* resolution, *WITHOUT*
interpolation. Most consumer cameras are 4:3 resolution. Simple
algebra follows...

width * height = 4 megapixels

width * width * 3 / 4 = 4 * 1024 * 1024

width * width * 3 = 4 * 4 * 1024 * 1024

Now take square root of both sides...

width * (3)^0.5 = 4 * 1024

(3)^0.5 is approximately 1.73205 and the following numbers have a
little bit of round-ff error

width = 2364

height = width * 3 / 4

height = 1773

So you're looking at 2364 X 1773 as the theoretical max. To simplify
manufacturing, and reduce costs, memory should be sized to something
that comes out to a "round number" *IN BASE 2". My Panasonic FZ5 (5
megapixals) manual also covers the FZ4 (4 megapixels). The FZ4's max
picture size is 2304 X 1728. The FZ5 goes to 2560 X 1920.
