"Alan Browne" wrote in message news Skip M wrote: Oh, quite true, and get more HP and torque from smaller displacements. Witness the upcoming Chrysler 300C SRT-8. 425 hp from 6.1 liters, when in the '60s, it took 7 liters to get that output. And if you want to talk torqueless wonders, and keep it in the Honda family, consider the S2000, especially the early version. 240hp from 2 liters, around 150 ft/lb torque, IIRC, max torque at something in the neighborhood of 8000 rpm... Yet in the last couple years where they move the valve timing at lower RPM, they are getting much more low-RPM torque than the earlier non-racing VTEC's. VTEC seems made to perform at high RPM which is not a good choice for regular driving. The car goes fast as hell, but it is long getting off the block... you feel it kick at about 2500, then yahoo, but it means staying in lower gears longer and means that highway passing acceleration is a bit on the weak side (eg: 2am on a Maine back road in the fog and the drunks are taking it slow and you just want to get around them and leave them behind ... that's when you want torque in reserve...) Okay, you get the last word and that's it, we're way OT!
