Ouch! The battery only has 65% the juice of the 300D's battery. Yuck. They
really pulled out all the stops to make the smallest, lightest dSLR out
there at any cost. That will probably push a lot of 300D owners over to the
20D.

Half the weight, 65% of the juice. They say you'll still get 600 shots
per charge because of the lower power consumption.

I don't really mind that, since I never can go through more than a
battery a day with my 10D. But I'm not going to foist the 10D on eBay
until I see some sample photos, damnit!

I'm a bit concerned about what happens when a power sucking 70-300mm DO
IS is put on it. I suppose the battery grip isn't much extra weight
compared to that lens, though.

Let's see... One LiIon is ~5.3 W/h, two LiIons is ~10.7 W/h, and 6 NiMH
cells is ~16 W/h. That means there's a total of three power
configurations depending on how much weight you want to carry.

6 Alkalines provide up to ~25 W/h from 4.8 oz. (138g) if they aren't
drained too quickly. That might work very well if the camera is used
periodically over a full day.

I have a 300D with 2 batteries. I've never been able to run out of juice
so far. Even with 500 pictures and extensive usage of the built in
flash, I barely finished one battery. So unles you'll be taking 1000
pictures per session...I don't see the power to be a problem.
In addition, the batteries are recharging very quickly.

It's 490 grams without battery and 540 grams with CF and supplied battery.
The Pentax *ist-DS is 505 grams (don't know if that includes battery).

The 350D is 94mm in height, while the Pentax *ist-DS is 93mm in height.
(Due to shallow Pelican box other dimensions aren't as important to me.)

Nice!

Now it seems that my choice to eventually buy a Pentax this spring
is seriously challenged!!!!!

Small is beautiful.

One thing I am a little confused about - excuse my ignorance -

From what I keep reading on this and other groups, The Rebel is
just another name for the 300D, right? And rebelXT is another
name for the 350D? Why two names for the same camera? Seems
like the rebel line has a lighter shade of body than the 300's -
Is that just cosmetic, internals are identical? Is 'Rebel' the
US name?

Canon calls their entry level cameras "Kiss" in Japan, "Rebel" in the US,
and number everywhere else. As in "You can kiss my rebel 234XQsd234"

Bostonian? I didn't know that. I'm about 25 miles north of the city...

I personally like long battery life, but the $500 cost difference will
buy a lot of high-capacity replacements, and a nice lens to boot. I can
handle changing batteries every 300-600 shots. : )

My (long late) grandparents had a farm in West Peabody. The tube here had a
brief segment on the Topsfield Fair the other day (reporting on the giant
pumpkin competition).

Yes, it's cold.

There's a light dusting of slushy snow on Tokyo for the second time this
