I'm not the one hiding behind a fake email address. You have sufficient information to find me on Facebook and read about my Canon FX collection: 500+ camera bodies and 800+ lenses; one or more of every lens that Canon nospam is referring to the Canon 1200mm f/5.6 of which there are less than 20 in the world and most are leased to qualified lessors. The purchase price was about $115,000 last time I looked. If you have one, I'd be quite surprised. don't forget he said he had not one, but *three* of them. I suspect he's referring to something else. He didn't say they were the f5.6. Didn't Canon also make a slower one? If so, presumably cheaper and sold in greater numbers, as is usual for fast Vs slow tele's. Trevor. |

The D800. I find the Canon FX system from the 1960's to be a pretty solid performer. I especially like the 1200mm lens; of course a sturdy tripod is essential. Yes, I agree, but I was talking about Canon's newest line of DSLRs. The 5D III is still an excellent camera. But, like all tools, you need to learn it's limitations and live within them. I'm keeping my 5D II for the time being. |

And of course that depends on who's doing the evaluation. On the evidence so far, (if I wasn't invested in Canon equipment) I'd certainly buy the Nikon over the Canon however. I *won't* be buying a 5D3 though, just not enough to justify an upgrade, or the extra money over the 5D2 IMO. Trevor. |

I *won't* be buying a 5D3 though, just not enough to justify an upgrade, or the extra money over the 5D2 IMO. Compared to the wish lists for the 5D3 that filled the dpreview forums prior to it's release, I'd say Canon hit the vast majority of what people were asking for, mainly burst rate and pro-level AF. There really was an incredible amount of complaining that the 5D2 wasn't a cheap 1-series camera. Canon even improved shadow pattern noise about a stop, but not enough to stop the squawking. (In real life here, both 5D and 5D2 ISO 100 and 200 images can't be boosted 2 stops without getting washed out; pattern noise isn't the problem.) So for the vociferous complainers, the 5D3 is exactly what they wanted. But for landscape wannabes such as myself, the D800 is what we wanted. Sigh. Good show, Nikon. Still, the 5D2 remains an amazing camera, if you actually make prints. It's significantly better than 645 film, even with the very best films (Velvia, TMX100). And it should be a lot of fun with the new 24-70/2.8 II, whose MTF charts indicate that it's the first zoom that actually competes with primes. -- David J. Littleboy Tokyo, Japan |

Perhaps, and everyone else, especially those not already welded to Canon, will probably buy the Nikon instead. I doubt that will make Canon very happy. Exactly, and the price difference between what the 5D2 and 5D3 are now selling for, makes it hard to justify a 5D3 if money is any consideration at all. One shop here is selling a 5D2 with 24-105L lens for less than the 5D3 body alone. I wonder how long before Canon is forced to drop the price of the 5D3? I thank Nikon for that eventuality at least! :-) Trevor. |
