I don't use the lock down lever, should I? It seems to me that the
rack and pinion gear of the focusing knob is quite steady, and that
locking it down is unecessary.

I do not find the rack and pinion gears of the focusing knobs are steady
enough. Similarly the swings, tilts, rise and fall, etc. So I lock
things down. While adjusting the camera, when things are pretty close, I
gently tighten the lock knobs but not enough. Then if I need to, I can
make minor adjustments. But before setting the shutter, inserting film
holders, etc., I lock them more securely.

What i find annoying is the fact that i must hold my breath if i
don't wanna fog everything up!

Drink distilled spirits instead of water. Alcohol evaporates more
quickly than does water.

One way to eliminate one hand is to go to your favorite
Pro shop and ask for "A Sucking Loup". It's no joke.
I forget the company but what it looks like is a loupe
with a suction cup on one end.
Couple the design with a language translation and you get
"A Sucking Loup"

So you're under this focusing hood that
covers the upper half of your body.

You need one hand to hold a loupe up to
the ground glass, right?

And the other may need to go to either side
of the camera to adjust and then lock down
the controls, right?

So how do you manage that? What's the trick?

And I can envision the outing, too. It's a lovely morning,
the sun is minutes away from rising, the wife has graciously
acquiesced to my request that she accompany me for the
sunrise. I'm under the dark cloth, making a few adjustments,
and I realize that my focusing aid is in the backpack.

"Hand me the sucking loup."

WHACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
