1st experience with Costco/Qualex

OK, so I take a few around town shots on a roll of provia 100f that I have. I decided I will try out Costco and see how things go with Qualex E-6. The roll I sent them had 35 exposures [accidentally clicked one into my lens cover ..doh!]. Dropped off on a Saturday about 11:30AM and there is a sign that development is now taking 4-5 days. Well, day 5 .. no pictures. I do some checking and it sounds like it is still processing. Day 8 the photos arrive. Great. I get the envelope it and it has masking tape all over it. It is manhandled. I get it home and open up the kodak box. The frames are nice. The images are developed well ... all 8 of them!!! Out of 35 images, they lost 27 of them somewhere! The box clearly says they developed 35 images. They even left the remnant of the film at the end of the roll in the box. So, WTF! Does this happen with them often? Do I have recourse? Do I dare try them again? The price was nice at $3.19. I used to use them a long long ago. I remember I was in desperate need of finding someone who would reliably respect my "no cutting, no mounting" instructions. I encountered a large percentage of miserably developed films, probably too old chemicals. They lost however only once a film of a whole bunch which I gave to them. Qualex has also cut my films randomly and received several written protests from me. However everything has changed since someone has recommended me Calypso Inc in Santa Clara. Do yourself a favor and go with them! I never looked back. http://www.calypsoinc.com/ Click on film services. E6 process is either 2h or next day pickup. Push, pull, everything you wish. Splendid! They look awesome ... except I am in Minneapolis. I will gladly mail to them, but I am unclear how return shipping works. They indicated free UPS shipping over $75, but if under $75, how do I know what the return shipping is? Perhaps I should just give them a call. Correct, they take mail orders as well. They will also correctly process any "do not mount" or "do not cut" instructions. You can get mounted slides, film strips in sleeves or uncut roll. Same with negatives: uncut roll, strips and optional contact sheet with images. All sorts of pull/push processes are also available. By the way I still have some 10 Kodak mailers and 10 Fuji mailers for E6 process :-) They lay around, maybe I should simply ship it to someone who would like to use them? Thomas |

Want my address? Local E-6 work is sporadic at best, a decent lab is an hour away, which drives the cost way above mailers and their dependable service. I don't have demands on my turnaround time, since I also have to sleeve and catalog my stuff anyway. So, name a price ;-) - Al. They are free Al, these mailers lie around for several years, I am glad that someone might be using them! Leave me a message with your address at pbase.com/phototalk_thh! Thomas |
