Mysterious stuff inside my lens
I have an old 85mm Nikkor lens
with what appears to be a hundreds of fine scratches on the inside of the front element. There is a little fungus inside but these "marks" don't look like fungus to me. Could this be the lens coating degenerating or something like taht? If so, is it costly to have it removed or cleaned? Thanks Matt |

You can send a e-mail inquiry to either
www.nikon.com or www.nikonusa.com for a estimate. But I'll wager the cost is greater than the value of the lens. Good luck! = = = (Quest0029) wrote in message ... It could be that the fungus made tiny etchings in the glass. Or it
could be remnants of the fungus. Either way, have the lens inspected professionally by Nikon or a competent repair person. They will be able to tell you much better than a bunch of Internet know-nothings .... self included. |

I don't really understand why this would be true.....Perhaps you could order a replacement front element, and have a local repair shop replace it for you......Surely Nikon should be able to ship you a replacement element for a reasonable fee.....After all, their is no labor involved. Just the expense of the element plus shipping and handling. What would be their justification for charging you any more? - Assuming, of course, that they have extra front elements in stock, and don't have to have one made........ |

Perhaps there is some way to remove the lens, and have the inside surface repolished by someone who knows how to do such things.....There are people who grind and polish their own telescopes and mirrors........ |

Thanks Matt If you're sure it's just the front element, why not just take it out and Windex it? If that doesn't work, then send it to a repair shop? I'd forget Nikon though.
