I just got a Mustek portable HD. It's really fantastic as a back up for all
the cards and even straight from the camera.
Works up to 2 hours on the internal battery (that means copying 1,000's of
pics), so more than enough to fill the whole disc several times.
I tested it with my D300 and it works flawless: attach the cable, turn the
camera en de HD on and press the button. For every transfer it makes a new
folder, even if you copy the same.
You can attach any cardreader you may have and it will copy anything on
it.

Now it is "only" 20 GB, but the sweet things about it are these:

1. you have a back up anywhere you want
2. even if your cardreader should fail, you can still download the pics
from the camera
3. you'll save on expensive CF cards, because you only need 2 fast ones to
keep shooting
4. much less waiting time for pics to transfer; from the HD goes much
faster than the fastest CF cards!

I bought this one from Media Markt in Sintra, Portugal, for 39,- euro.
Think about it: even 1 Sony CF card 2 GB, 20 MB speed, cost 49,

From my D300 the highest quality pics are 14 bit NEF, from which it will
hold about 1250 pictures! That's a lot for any day.

If that's not enough, just buy another one!

Here's a link:

http://www.mustek.de/eng_/html/produkte/phd20.htm

And don't worry about not being solid state: it handles G forces up to 100
G in operating mode, 1000 G in non operating mode.

I rate it a 9.9 on the Focus scale.

I have a Vosonic VP8360 for that use.
It has a 160Gb HD and its own built in card reader.
It also has a 9cm LCD screen, the ability to record video straight from the
TV, an MP3 player built in and more.

OK it is more expensive but not that much per Gb and much more useable.

They aren't expensive.

If you think 16 GB for $ 450.- is a good deal ....

No, but I think 2gb for $10 is.

That might be OK if you shoot JPG.

I only shoot RAW, and use 2gB CF cards + 60GB Digimate.
I guess you must use your camera for video if you really have no time to
swap cards.

I haven't found a way to get a Nikon D80 to shoot video yet.

You must be awfully slow at swapping cards then!
I have no such problem with my Canon.

Where did I say anything about swapping cards being slow?

I have a few 4GB SDHC cards that hold about 300 photos each. I'm happy with
that.

So please explain then why 2GB cards are only useful for JPG as you wrote
above!
Did you actually have a point you were trying to make?

Sure, and I have 3*2GB CF cards and a 60GB digimate, I'm happy with that.

OK, sounds cool! But is it smaller than a pack of sigarettes and weigh less
than a 150 gramms?
But 10 X the price? Oops!
Thanks for the tip. Now I know what to ask for my birthday ;-)

I just came up with something interesting why I just love these mechanics:

Did you know that this little HD accelerates from 0 to 1750 KM/h (or over
1,000 M/h) in just a few secs?
The G-force alone should put all bits and bytes in orbit, LOL!

My PC hard disks do it even better: almost 6,000 KM/h or about 4,500 M/h !!

Tell that to someone bragging about their fast Ferrari or Porsche ;-)

But 8 X the capacity and lots more functionality. I also use it to record TV
programmes when away from the TV. Quality is just as good as with a hard
disk recorder.
It is about two cigarette packs but I don't need to carry a card reader or a
cord to connect to the camera.

This looks interesting and Is potential what I have been trying to find. Why
did you choose this over the VP 550 series? What kind of battery life do you
get in real use?
