Default Photoshop File Name

In Photoshop CS4, is there a way to prevent Photoshop from changing the file
name when saving?

At the moment, after opening a RAW file in ACR, when saving to TIFF it
always adds "as Smart Object-1 copy.tif" to the end of the file name.
Likewise, when saving for web, it always adds "as-Smart-Object-1.jpg" to the
end of the file name.

Is there a way to get PS to leave my file name as it is?

Also, is there a way to get PS to save as TIFF by default, as opposed to
PSD?

Unless you have a need, don't open as a smart object, (change your open
settings in ACR,) or if you must use smart objects,, create a "save as"
action which rasterizes the image and gives you the result you seek. Assign
the action to a key you can remember.

You might want to check the Adobe Forums and/or the PS NGs, where your
question might even have been answered. There are tons of tutorials on the
web on how to do this. .

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I want to keep smart objects as I use the TIFF as a working file,
therefore keeps all layers, masks, etc. saved so I can go back into the TIFF
and easily make changes without starting from scratch again.

I already have an action I run for saving/output, which is part of the
reason why I find it annoying that PS keeps wanting to change the file name.
If it didn't want to change the file name and type every time, I could just
use the keyboard keys and hit enter when prompted to save.

I know it sounds trivial, but when you have to keep changing it every time,
after lots of photos it starts to become annoying. There must be a way to
change it. Somehow.

If you are going to work on the file again why are you saving as a tiff.
Since PSD is really a proprietary form of tiff and the file size in tiff is
often larger than PSD, why not just save your final version as a tiff.
Otherwise I do not know the answer. I suspect what you want to do cannot be
done..

Because TIFF is a more universal format than PSD and also has ISO
certification IIRC. Thus more future proof and software independent.

I understand that, which is why I meant the work around was to work in PSD
and then convert your final version to tiff. I also understand that
sometimes you cannot do this. I sometimes prefer the to use some of the
filters in Corel Painter X, which will not read PSD.

Rewinding a bit, who on earth thought it would be a good idea to
automatically rename the users file names with "Smart Object" anyway? Where
did that come from? I can't think of any useful purpose for it.

Can Tiff save layers? Can any other file format besides .psd save layers?

Yeah, of course TIFF can save layers. As for other formats, I don't know.

I'm going to sound like a right knob now, but I don't care about other file
formats if I'm honest. But that was not what the post was about originally.

There is no certification, but a standard - and that does not matter
anything. The TIFF format is a means of packaging "tagged" information (the
first T) inside a file. But the information is sometimes proprietary. In
Photoshop's case Photoshop is in many cases the only application that can
read all content of a PS TIFF file!

A layered PSD file has much better probability of getting opened properly
in the future than a layered TIFF file.
