Default Epson P-2000

wrote:
I agree that we are using the unit for different reason. Before I
bought my Archos, I did consider the Epson because of its name.
However, it is much thicker than the Archos unit. I don't think P-2000
can play MP3 either (which you may not need). I don't remember if it
can play video too.
I also considered about a cheap lap top, as for the same price you now
can get a whole computer.
Anyway, I am happy with the one I get. I splitted my photos into 2
main folders... storage folder and viewing folder. The storage folder
contains the original photo files (large size). The viewing folder
contain reduced size photos (1024x800 or so), so that it can load the
photos fast for viewing and have good enough details for the LCD
screen. With a 120GB space, there is ample storage for both folders +
plus some MP3 files + video files. With an accessories DVR station, I
can even get some of my favourite TV program for viewing with my
Archos.
I even considered to get a Sony PSP, or a cheaper Radio Shack photo
viewer ( this one you have to put the photos in a CD) and play the
CD... or even a cheap DVD player. But again, my archos is compact and
can do all of those.
I believe Archos has a Texas Instrument processor engine and a Hitachi
hard drive in it. I know that I was worried about Archos name.Epson
has better reputation. But, so far is so good for me, and I am happy.
I am now busy scanning all my old and lifetime photos and dump them
all in my Archos. Of course, I also back them up in DVD and hard
drive media.

Just a curiosity... if you just want to get storage more space while
shooting in the field... for $700, you can probably get 20 x 1 GB
camera storage cards! Are'nt they more convenient then bringing your
P-2000/5000 ? At the end of the day, you can downloaded all into your
lap top.

Several reasons:
-Speed of large dumps fo files at the end of the day (to a lap-top)
-Redundancy
-Viewing in the field
-Very versatile video playback (compared with the P-2000)
-And...see below:

One of the coolest features of the new P-5000/3000 is it's ability to act as
a USB host. This means that you can actually control, view, and copy/paste
the contents of any external hard drive...without even having a computer.
This means I can take a huge 500GB external hard drive over-seas, and use my
Epson to shuffle files to and from. It also allows me to dump images onto
anyone's USB flash drive, etc. This is a very nice feature. One more
thing, and perhaps the reason I should keep my P-2000, is that I can access
the P-2000's files right from my P-5000.

It might be better to invest in one of the less expensive laptops
which are now available. It's not a laptop replacement.

When you're out in the field with your gear and shooting
extensively, it's nice to be able to perform safe and complete
back-ups without lugging a laptop with you, or having to find a
place to boot it up. I merely stick the card into the unit, start
the backup (takes about 5 or 6 seconds) and keep shooting with
another card. -When the back-up finishes, the unit shuts off, and I
can retrieve the card when I back up the next one. All this is done
with no break in shooting. I have a very lightweight laptop which
weighs only about 3.5 lbs, and yet its my Epson that comes with me
into the field. If the laptop comes on the trip, it stays in my
hotel (or tent) while I'm out shooting, and is used for more serious
review of the days shots.

Not everyone needs portable storage, but for those of us that do,
these small and reliable units are of real benefit...especially when
they fit right into existing camera bags.

Yes. It is an expensive but slow toy.

But when you NEED it, it is wonderful.

I'd not buy one just to look at photos. I used mine as a
secondary storage to back up my CF cards when I was miles
and miles from anyplace I could do backups.

The laptop will be more expensive, heavier, and much more fragile.

Tell us now MarkČ... How do you suppose I grew my business if I can't

used by tens of thousands of people all over the world to turn postcard size

belittling and personally vilifying remarks. How disgusting can you get?

Get yourself a life child. targeting a professional Photographer and owner

Had you offered some (ANY) qualifications relating to photography or photo

Does the P-5000 rename your files when you offload your CF cards onto
it? This was the main reason I sold my P-2000.

???
No, and neither did my P-2000! That sounds very strange, and makes me
wonder if there was an optional setting you had perhaps activated without
realizing it. My P-2000 never changed anything in the file names. All it
did was copy the entire contents of the card...including the folders set up
by my camera (DCIM...103...IMG_1288.jpg, for example).

I wouldn't have tolerated that, so something must have been funky in your
settings...

That is where I got one yesterday....but they are a refurb. Thats okay

They're probably selling the last of their stock of them, as it's been
replaced...so if you want one, I wouldn't wait around too long.

(By the way... Can you tell I'm not a salesman?? -Talking you into

I just figure if you can buy one there NEW...then I'd have to sell mine at

It is expensive, but it certainly isn't a "toy." -It's for a lot
more than simply "viewing pictures" though... It's a very useful
device in the field because it provides back-up of your image
files, which allows you to keep shooting on long trips where your
memory cards are insufficient, or where laptops are a problem to
lug along. I have both the P-2000 and the newer P-5000.

There is nothing more reassuring that knowing that while you keep
shooting, your other full card is being backed up onto your
device... Even more reassuring, you can view the shots on the
amazing screen to make sure everything is as it should be.

If you're interested, I'd consider selling my perfectly
functioning P-2000.
It's in perfect condition, and works extremely well.
The P-5000 is faster, but costs $700 smackers...

I am joking about the 'toy' part.

What are you willing to sell it for?

I wasn't planning to...but I realize that I don't use it any more,
now that I have the P-5000.

I don't know, though... I just checked, and you can still buy the
P-2000 new for $299.
