Hi,

I'm new to the group. I'm just starting out (who isn't, right?) and I
was wondering if anyone knows of some suppliers that have nice
backdrops. I was checking out ebay and there are a few that I'm
interested in, but I thought I would try here first. I'm looking for
an old master type of look, (tried do one on my own, yuk)and I don't
really want to spend the ridiculous amount that Denny's asks, but I
don't want something that looks like it was spray painted either. Any
suggestions?

I like the kits that Phototek makes. http://www.photekusa.com/

or, you can look through what B&H has. www.bhphoto.com/ choose
"Lighting and Studio" from the left menu, choose "Background Materials &
Equipment" under "Studio Equipment". There are a lot of options there.

For a really cheap background, get a section of material from a fabric
store, and arrange it like you would over a window (with the hills and
valleys... not sure what to call them). then, use a single light to
light the background, and place it to one side. with good use of DOF,
it should look pretty nice.

background making is highly competitive, which means you get what you pay
for most of the time. Pay less and you get something far too thin, or
cheesy color.

Denny's is ridiculous, they are one of the low enders, perhaps low balled
now by korean imports and folks who work for a buck over minimum wage, but
their product line was always aimed at the volume type shooter.

The z-prophoto mailing list at yahoogroups.com has a whole folder of links
on background makers from the cheesiest to the most elaborate.

I have been trying to get some backgrounds as well
but as I am new to backgrounds and have only used seamless paper types in
studio during my
photography courses I have a few questions relating to my situation.
I have noticed that the backgrounds come in different types of materials and
in my case what type
would be the most recommended if I need portability since would require to
transport equipment
in the boot of my car and also foldable that I can store it almost anywhere
without difficulty. I'll mostly
be using it in portraiture, usually one or two people but occasionally
family or groups too.
Thanks in advance
Chris
