Nikon D200 ISO 3200 for macro
I was doing macro shots today on the new D200 (only 1500 frames shot
heh), trying to get more DOF & dealing with wind blowing the subjects around so I did many of the shots at ISO 800 and this one at ISO 3200: http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=California/Bay-Area/San-Francisco/edgehill-garden/Nursery/plants/2006-05-25-closeups&PG=5&PIC=25 I thought it's pretty useable and it was even underexposed a tad. Scroll down to the subgallery & there are some full pixel crops of the in-camera jpeg, a 'default' raw conversion and the uncropped original. Here's one at ISO 800 with max sharpening in RSE: http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=California/Bay-Area/San-Francisco/edgehill-garden/Nursery/plants/2006-05-25-closeups&PG=3&PIC=17 I shouldn't have manipulated so much but the uncropped view (previous shot) is ok for web use. Most of these were using a +2 diopter closeup lens attachment on the 70-200/2.8 VR so DOF was not easy to get. The previous frame is 1/160 f/5 140 mm ISO 100 and very minimal DOF. I'm beginning to get the hang of macro though it's not easy. Another thing I'm learning is the imortance of lining up objects along the focal plane and the D200's big viewfinder lets me see DOF preview so I can really tell what I'm getting & I optimise the distance to the hyperfocal with more DOF behind that. And the nice LCD lets me check to see if I got it, real quick to zoom in & examine detail as well as a computer monitor. The viewfinder is much nicer than the D70 which had a grainy texture that obscured the bokeh effects badly. I can come real close to seeing the final bokeh in the viewfinder now. |

Nikon D200 ISO 3200 for macro
Shooting objects in macro that are active is difficult. DOF at higher
mag, is very shallow and motion of the camera can easily blur an image anyway. I don't know how someone can do macro of moving objects without continuous autofocus. With static objects, manual focusing is better. This was done with three close-up lenses and a zoom. http://www.pbase.com/andersonrm/image/60734727 |
