Default Canon Pulls 20D Firmware Update

Well Canon must be listening, The 1.04 firmware update has been pulled. I
wonder how I can "downdate" back to 1.02.

I have directly experienced my *first* lockup using the *new*
software, shortly after it was upgraded.

So, 1.0.4 does not guarantee no lockups.

If you have the 1.04 update and its WORKING I dont think you need to worry..
Its the people that aren't getting it right that have caused the the firmware
to go away.

If you put into the camera and the camera is still working, and there are no
ADDITIONAL bugs, you should be taking pictures and giving it a shakedown run.
If a problem surfaces THEN worry about a "downdate".

My guess is that they pulled it due to the calls they got from
unsuccessful upgraders. Perhaps they are looking for an upgrade
approach that has fallback approach.

My guess is that if you have successfully installed 1.04 (as I have) all
is good.

So perhaps 1.04 will be replaced by 1.05 (or 1.06)!

Maybe firmware should work like flashing a PC BIOS, award saves the old .bin
file in case you have to go back. This would be useful if the dSLR could
revert to a previous version if the install failed.

if the firmware is corrupted, it is unlikely that you will be able to
reflash again without hardware reprogramming (that is, sending the
camera back to Canon for reprogramming)
This happens, for example when people accidentally or mistakenly cut the
power off before the firmware update is done.

And it is very normal for a new product to have bugs in its firmware.
However, most digital camera users are no technology geek. reflashing
could be a daunting task for them that why we see a lot of screwups. I
wish Canon could have done a better job of weeding the bugs before they
release the products. I guess comsumer pressure, competition forced
them to release the product before it is ready.

what the Consumers should do is to wait a few month after the first
batch release before purchasing.

Yes. Maybe that is what they are trying to acheive -- though I'm not
sure the hardware supports a backup.

The hardware should not need to support back-up, it should be possible
to download earlier versions and install which ever you wish, subject to
exclusions due to any hardware differences.
