IF they truly can make a cheaper 100mp (not much use in doing 50, they've already exceeded that with FF, but then the 50mp would be less noisy) they should do it fast because pretty soon, multi-shot HR images handheld will become the norm.

Isn't this where it all started? https://www.nicovandijk.net/D1a.JPG
Its gone a long way from there.

That, an Kodak/Nikon, Kodak/Canon and I think, Nikon/Fuji which predated the D1.

Those were all experimental but the Nikon D1 was the first to hit the
market, and it was medium format.

The lenses for these large sensor cameras will never be mass marketed like for the APS and FF DSLR and mirrorless cameras, they are too expensive, barring any radical break-through in lens technology. Medium format's best selling feature is the quality of results (within the confines of its shooting abilities) compared to current high-megapixel FF cameras so that is the target
market. Sony's A7RIV has brought with it noise so 61mp is beginning to probe the limits of FF and a 100mp Fuji's image quality wipes the floor with it, a price. Selling against high megapixel FF cameras is where any new Fuji comes into play. If by some miracle of marketing or pricing Fuji can drop the 100mp camera's price to $5000, then it would really be interesting. But at $10,000, it's still in another realm, even against the top pro Canon and Nikon bodies.

The Nikon D1 medium format??

....and here I was believing it to be a DX sensor camera. I must have missed something in the development of MF sensor cameras.

Brain fart. I was thinking of 24 x 36 as full format and DX etc as
medium. :-(
