Default kodak easyshare cx4230 digital camera

I've just inherited one of these cameras, and it was taking quite good
pictures, when it suddenly stopped working.
The symptoms a
zoom lens is sticking out and does not retract when off/on switch is moved
to the "off" position.
Switching the camera to the "on" position has no effect on the zoom lens,
and the "ready" light, which previously flashed green, then gave a steady
green light when ready to take pictures, now gives one green flash, followed
by ten red flashes, then nothing.
The Kodak nimh batteries which were working ok before, appear to be properly
charged, and give this indication on the easyshare base.
Other nimh batteries which worked previously do not help, and dry cell
energizer batteries which were previously working with the camera do not
help either.

Can anyone give any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Peter
