Nikon-What to pay...

Beyond the usual scams avoid the following:

Sellers who have added a bunch of no-name extras such as cheap tripod, bag and memory. These items are often worth little more than a few dollars. They jack up the price on the package making you think it's a deal. Someone here is selling a package like this here now!
Sellers who add a VERY cheap lens to the so-called "package." Check the price of that lens. Some are worth only 50-75 bucks or LESS!
Sellers such as Prestige, Royal, Camera addict and so on. If the price is a lot lower than B&H or Adorama you're about to be scammed. I know the sites look real, but these outfits are not stores and will rip you off.

The Good Captain would be happy to not see people ripped off by
thieves selling Nikon gear, so here's what you SHOULD BE PAYING for
USED GEAR. USED GEAR is anything not from a store. I don't care if
someone claims they never opened the box. That's nonsense. So here we
go with some samples of what you SHOULD BE PAYING....

D200.....Available now for as little as 1200 bucks new. You should pay
under 1050 or less, but better to buy one new!
D80.......Selling for around 850 bucks online new. Buy one new unless
it's really cheap.
D70s.....I just bought a nice one as a backup for 475 like new and
with memory. Anything under 525 is probably fair if it's not heavily
used!
D70....Don't pay much more than 400 bucks! PERIOD.
D50....Selling new for 450 bucks at places like Buydig, so a used one
should be about 300-350 or so.
D40....A silly camera! Don't buy one.
D100....Old now and only worth about 500 with a vertical grip
D1X....Ultra dated and selling at places like KEH.com for 650.00 to
850.00 for a nice one, but buy something newer.
D2H...older model, but still superb. You should be able to find a nice
one for 1000-1200 dollars. 1200 should be very good to mint or keep
looking.
D2Hs....Current and expensive. Expect to pay around 2500.00 for a good
one.
D2Xs....Current and expensive. You might find a good used one for
under 3000 dollars.
Remember to ask about shutter actuations. How many times has the
shutter fired? Less than 10K is light use and anything over 25K is
getting up there. Still, even a camera with 50K presses could last you
a long long time.

SB800 Flash.....225-250 for a MINT sample with box.
SB600 Flash.....125 for a MINT sample with box.

18-200VR lens.....hard to find, but you CAN get one. Just order and
wait a bit. Used ones sell for the same cost as new, but DON'T pay
above that! I bought two and paid 750 each.
18-70DX lens....the popular kit lens sells everywhere for about 200
bucks used. Nice lens.
18-55DX...Cheaper kit lens can be found new for 160. Used it should
100.00.
17-55DX....about 950 used
70-300VR....NOT that hard to find, so don't pay too much. I bought
mine NEW for 529.00 from B&H and got it with only a week's wait.
80-400VR....The release of the new 70-300VR has made the 80-400 into a
dinosaur due to it's slow focusing. Typically a nice used on sells for
900-1100 dollars. They go for about 1400 new.

A lot of buyers just aren't aware that prices have dropped and some
sellers prey on that, trying to sell a D70s for 599, while a new one
will cost just 20 dollars more! Another guy just listed a D1X for
twice what it's worth! People paid a lot and got outmoded. That's life
in the digital world. Do your research, check Nikon for rebates and
happy shooting! This page will probably get shot down by the thieves,
but I'll simply repost it again...and again.
Check prices on sites like B&H and Buydig.com to see what this stuff
costs new, then check sites like KEH.com for used prices or Nikonians
which has a classified section. Research what you buy!
