Plaubel 8X10
I no sooner expressed an interest in large format photography this very day
and I meet a guy, friend of a friend, who starts talking about his large format camera he never uses. It is a Plaubel 8 X 10 camera with a 4X5 back. He described it as having full tilt and swivel controls. He could not remember the lens details but said he would probably like to sell it for $500. He said he bought it new for $1700. Is this a good camera for some one who is starting in large format photography? Is it a good price? What should I check out before I buy it? Any tips? -- "These are the times that try men's souls." Having travelled the path of small to medium to large formats myself,
I'd suggest you move to 4x5 rather than jumping to 8x10. If you are buying an 8x10 to shoot 4x5, consider the anount of extra weight you'll be carrying. There are many good 4x5's out there to do the deed, and I'd invest in a modern lens. Also, consider the darkroom requirements: 8x10 darkrooms are huge investments where as many used 4x5 darkrooms are available for modest price. Good Luck, abe Anonymous Nobody wrote in message ...
