Default making CF lens a CFE lens?

Is it possible to redesign (by factory or third party) an existing CF
lens into a CFE lens in terms of getting full 553ELD+digitalback
functionality? Anyone heard about such a thing?

As far as I know there's no refitting of the lenses to add electrical
contacts such as Leica has with their M lenses.

What's the typical advantage of using CFE+555ELD in comparison to 503CW
and CF(i) lenses? I've tried Google and searched PhaseOne's site, but
they only list compatibility, not the supported features for the
different camera models.

With CF lenses, does one have to stop down the lens manually before each
shot or...? Does TTL work, etc.?

No.
There is no reason to have, no advantage at all in having Databus contacts
in a lens that is used on an ELD.
The ELD cannot do anything at al with Databus contacts on CFE lenses.

Exactly. The CFE lenses were created for the 200-series cameras that
had built in electronics. The camera had to know what a lot of
information about what the lens was set at.

A lot?
One thing only: the aperture set.

Oh yeah, it doesn't need the shutter speed.

So it basically works like a other film back then? You set the exposure
time and aperture - like always - and then shoot?

Indeed.
The ELD synchronises back and camera through the contacts on its rear end,
but there is no link between shutter and aperture on one side and the back
on the other.
You set the back to an ISO value, and then meter and expose as it it was
film.
