Default Sandisk Ordinary vs. Ultra II CF cards

For my Canon A95, and for pleasure (non-professional) photography only, will Sandisk 512MB *Ultra II* Compact Flash cards (approx $110) perform significantly better than Sandisk *Ordinary* Compact Flash card (approx $85)?

I am not worried too much about the time to transfer files to PC (about 10 minutes for the slower card), only about the write time when taking a picture or viewing images in the camera.

Ultra II has a write rate of 9MB/sec (from their website http://www.sandisk.com/retail/ultra2-cf.asp). I can't find this detail on the Sandisk website for the Ordinary card - reported to be 2.8 MB/sec (http://www.flashcards.co.nz/catalog/...roducts_id=100).

Will the 3 times faster Ultra II make a real difference during picture taking and preview?

Regards - JW

I don't think your A95 has the capability to match the read / write
throughput of the SD U2 [ IIRC .. only 1Ds / 1D Mk II is running around that
speed ]
But future-proof wise , get the U2

Another has answered your question but you're paying entirely too much. Go to www.newegg.com and you will find the Sandisk Ultra II 1Gb card for $150 plus .99 FedEx overnight shipping. These are not refurbs - brand new - factory packaging. I saved a bunch buying my CF's from them.

Interesting: There seems to be no penalty for buying larger cards. At
amazon.com 4GB is $650, 2GB is $320, and 1GB is $160. (The last time I
noticed, the largest cards were seriously expensive. It may be that the
latest monster size is the only expensive one: the 8GB Lexar is US$2,450!)

But that still leaves the question of whether the Ultra II is worth the
extra money...

Only if your camera can access access cards faster than the standard.

Looked up this reference above - Rob Galbraith's study seems to show that on
Sandisk 512 MB Ultra II (9MB/sec rated write speed) the Canon Rebel only
writes at 1.284 MB/Sec. On the Ordinary Sandisk 512MB (rated at 2.8MB/sec
rated write speed) it writes at 724KB/sec. These actual write speeds are
very much below the card's rated speeds.

At 724 KB/sec the camera will take 4 seconds to write a 5MPixel resolution
image, superfine quality of about 2.5MB. 4 Seconds! Does the camere buffer
this operation, so that I don't have to wait that long to take my next
picture?
