Try looking it up in a dictionary.

What about those 70s japanese rangefinders?

What '70s japanese rangefinders'?

You asked about SLR's! Check out KEH's website and look at Leicaflex
SL's and 2-cam lenses.

After posting this I stumbled upon camera quest and they list a few by
canon (canonet), olympus. konica...

the olympus RC seems to appeal to my taste. small, manual control,
reputedly good lens. i don't mind that their lenses are not
interchangeable. They also suggest these are quiet and this appeals to
me much.

any comments?

The prices are a little intimidating, especially the lenses

its leica. its a status symbol not a camera. you can take pictures
with leica but a different one - one designed as a tool - would be
notjust cheaper but also more effective.

Lies, lies, lies. The Leicaflex and its lenses are superb tools, and
will make your photography better because it becomes intuitive.

From the Canon camp, an A-1 is probably a good match.

It's a piece of crap. A Leicaflex SL is not much more.
