Slide cleaning advice please
Hello,
Recently I've started scanning some of my old slides, and I've noticed that some of them are quite dirty. What is the best and safest way to clean them? I think Edwal makes a cleaning solution - does anyone know exactly what it's called? Thanks. - Bill McMillan |

For water-based gunk, use water, preferably with a drop of wetting solution. - Al. -- To reply, insert dash in address to match domain below Online photo gallery at www.wading-in.net |

I'll second Al on the PEC - works a lot better than Edwal Cleaning

I think Edwal makes a cleaning solution - does anyone know exactly what it's called? It's called "Anti-Stat Film Cleaner" on the front of the bottle. And the back. Model #CCFC 1204, it says on the back. The other, more popular here I think, more modern choice is PEC-12 from Photographic Solution. Neither will work on water-based gunk, which turns out to be what most of the gunk on my old film is. I haven't yet dared try spot cleaning with distilled water -- another respondent mentioned that, do you have specific advice and procedures? The key point with contact cleaning methods is the thing that actually makes contact. PEC-pads, also from Photographic Solutions, are the canonical modern answer. And remember they can pick up sharp dirt *from the slide they're cleaning*; ideally use a different surface for each contact. Are they actually dirty, in a stuck-on sense, or just dusty? An anti-static brush and/or Beseler DustGun are a good start for loose dust, and much safer. -- David Dyer-Bennet, , http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b/ RKBA: http://noguns-nomoney.com/ http://www.dd-b.net/carry/ Pics: http://dd-b.lighthunters.net/ http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b/SnapshotAlbum/ Dragaera/Steven Brust: http://dragaera.info/ |
