Colorado Fall Color Update
Fall has apparently come to Colorado early this year! Maroon Bells
area near Aspen is peaking now! Highway 14 through the Poudre Canyon is also looking good at least a week early. Jim |

Was thinking of heading up next week but I can always push it up a bit. Thanks for the report Jim. Bill Hi Bill When I was in Crested Butte the last week of August, the leaves were already beginning to turn. In fact, more color was showing in Crested Butte then than we saw on the drive from Anchorage to Homer last week. I estimated in August that peak would be a week early. Local weather forecasters said earlier than that. My son went camping last weekend at Guenella Pass (11,000 feet south of Georgetown by I70) and says the aspens were at peak, a perfect golden yellow. All this implies that peak is this coming week in the San Juans (without actual info from that area). Roger |

Was thinking of heading up next week but I can always push it up a bit. I have a friend in Cedaredge that sent me some lovely fall color photos on the 5th. He was up on the Grand Mesa, they've also had their first snow. One of the photos was of a pond with a hill in shade. Where the sun had shone, the snow melted, but the shaded hill was still covered with a skiff. Very cool photo, it looked like half summer, half winter. I had to ask if it was photoshopped, it was not :-) I was at Aspen Alley in the Medicine Bow NF on the 10th and the color had just barely started there. I also heard from a friend about the same time that US191 going Rock Springs to Vernal was starting to turn. There's also this page: http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/recreation/fallcolors/report/ Looks like they update once a week. -- Angela M. Thanks Roger ... actually I found a report from Ridgway State Park (on the north edge of the San Juans) and here's what they said on Sept 14 ... "Aspen are starting to turn in the high country. Oakbrush is beginning to turn on north slopes. Cottonwoods are showing some color along the rivers. Expect colors to peak in 2-3 weeks." Hi, Bill Pretty good color starting on Taos Mtn last weekend, and the Santa Fe ski area looks pretty good from below. I'll be going up this PM. Cheers -- Pete Tillman Santa Fe |
