Default Kind of odd IR image effect

Notice the image in this Time Magazine spread. A heat-sensitive IR
image. Now, below (bottom link) the image inverted. IMO, it looks
less like a photographic negative inverted than uninverted.
It almost looks like they printed it that way for effect.

Common practice.

Almost all thermal imaging cameras have a black/white hot option. If
you are using thermal imaging for search and rescue then it is a lot
easier to find the warm body if you are using white-hot, so the cold
background is black rather than glaring white. On the other hand, if
you are using thermal imaging for seat of the pants fast jet night
flying then you often set black hot, because the cold sky is brighter,
as it would in daylight, and you are less likely to be disoriented.

Formal test procedures for measuring the sensitivity of thermal images
permit the user to toggle between black and white hot during the test to
establish optimum performance.
