[SI] Local culture - Alan's shot
The timing for this mandate was a bad fit ... winter is one of the better times for local culture, esp. the sugaring camp season; further, La Fete St-Jean Baptiste, is this Thur (24) and that is also culturaly important here in Quebec. Shown, what was 150-200 years or so ago, a typical French Canadian farmhouse, (now offices for a software firm). Thousands of these quaint houses are around today, always a pain to photograph as they are usually within a few feet of the road and wires abound. Quebecois today have many traditions and songs linked to the hardier life of the small pastoral villages and the north shore logging camps from the late 1700 to mid 1900's. In this shot I removed (photoshop) a roadsign that was centered in the shot. Cheers, Alan -- --e-meil: there's no such thing as a FreeLunch.-- |

Cool house. What's the roof? Cedar?

I figure Rosemere on Grande Cote but I can't picture where exactly.. J -- Justin F. Knotzke http://www.shampoo.ca PGP: http://www.shampoo.ca/pubkey.txt |

There are a lot of houses in the Ste-Therese, Rosemere, Ste-Rose area that are worthy of great photographs. As you know they are heavilly encumbered with trees or wires and signage as they are near the streets too often. Hard to get everything right. Cheers, Alan |

You're a couple km off. Ste-Therese, Blainville E. 100 m west of the 117 on the north side. Ok, I know it. I was thinking of the house on Grande Cote in Rosemere just past that place where they'd sell beer to underage kids.. It's that house on the north side of Grande Cote just past the old folks home (past the municipal pool). I have a painting done by the mother of a friend of mine of that mansion behind the Rosemere Inn. I'd love to shoot some film in there. There are a lot of houses in the Ste-Therese, Rosemere, Ste-Rose area that are worthy of great photographs. As you know they are heavilly encumbered with trees or wires and signage as they are near the streets too often. Hard to get everything right. Yes. Damn those old houses with huge trees eh? ;-) I'd love to shoot all those newer houses along the 640 in Rosemere in the spring. I can remember when they were building those. My father said to me: "Justin, do you remember in the spring when you used to ice skate down there?" "Umm, ya" Well, they are going to have some foundation problems in the spring. Sure enough, pumps pumping water galore, broken foundations from ice buildup.. Suckers. Wow, was that ever off topic. J -- Justin F. It's that house on the north side of Grande Cote just past the old folks home (past the municipal pool). G-C and Rose Alma? Beautiful old house. Difficult to photograph... that was also my bus stop when I went to school in Ste-Rose. Beer to underage kids in Rosemere!? Surely you jest! (The Rosemere Inn on a Friday/Saturday night... Math prof from RHS with a teenage girl on his knee... fathers coming in to pay off their 16 yr old sons bar bills... making their son pay the tip, at least) (I went to Curé Antoinne-Labelle, so I was a bit disconnected from the RHS social scene. Did go out with a few girls from RHS, though). Ah, the RMP... first kisses with Sylvie P., getting caught by her boyfriend, etc. One summer I went 15 inter-city competition swims 14/15 victories, 1 2nd place (damned breast stroke) ... beating the Curling Club's best in spades. Glory past. Odd pool too at 33.3 meters in length, and I could do two lengths underwater (then). Over two summers saw Myriam S. metamorphose from a skinny-gawky girl into WOMAN! Scandal one year when Michael ? impregnated .... S.H. was it? not sure? Both families Catholic ... shotgun-wedding, quietly moved away to Ontario... I have a painting done by the mother of a friend of mine of that mansion behind the Rosemere Inn. I'd love to shoot some film in there. It's easily accessible, I believe (outside). Another is La Maison Garth in Lorraine which I've done some photos of. Difficult with the wires and new condos on the opposite side of G-C. There are a lot of houses in the Ste-Therese, Rosemere, Ste-Rose area that are worthy of great photographs. Speaking of which there is a $6M house that just went up here that is the granddaddy of eyesores, and another more modest one (say $2M at best) in dark grey stone that is a hoot. Must do the photos some day under the theme "Money can't buy taste." when they were building those. My father said to me: "Justin, do you remember in the spring when you used to ice skate down there?" "Umm, ya" Well, they are going to have some foundation problems in the spring. I used to play in those fields, there was a decent packed earth bike path... lauched rockets, built and fired tenis ball cannon's, etc. A trib of the dog river (where you used to skate?) had some of the nastiest snapping turtles you can imagine. Wow, was that ever off topic. Compared to what? I have taken photos in/at all of the places mentioned!!! Cheers, Alan -- --e-meil: there's no such thing as a FreeLunch.-- |

I can't remember the exact name but Simon's Meat Market? Something market.. It is literally across the street from that Old Folks home on GC just past the municipal pool. We got all our beer there.. "You didn't buy this here" "Buy what?".. Ah, the RMP... first kisses with Sylvie P., getting caught by her boyfriend, etc. One summer I went 15 inter-city competition swims 14/15 victories, 1 2nd place (damned breast stroke) ... beating the Curling Club's best in spades. I was with you until this last bit. I raced for RCC. No way in hell you beat our guys. ;-) ;-) Why? Eyesores. Must do the photos some day under the theme "Money can't buy taste." Are we referring to the same place? It's that giant mansion right behind the Inn. It was set on fire many years ago and I think rebuilt. I'm not referring to those gawdy houses that Celine Dion bought for her mom.. I used to play in those fields, there was a decent packed earth bike path... lauched rockets, built and fired tenis ball cannon's, etc. A trib of the dog river (where you used to skate?) had some of the nastiest snapping turtles you can imagine. Take Cardinal all the way north and when you hit Normandie the forrest would start. It's all developed now.. But Cardinal turned into a dirt road and continued for a bit. Then you'd hit thicker woods. Just to the west of that was a little pond. We skated there. Compared to what? I have taken photos in/at all of the places mentioned!!! ;-) J -- Justin F. I was with you until this last bit. I raced for RCC. No way in hell you beat our guys. ;-) ;-) As a team we struggled in points but nobody at RCC beat me or Kevin Flynn. I quit swimming mid-season at age 16 after my first solo and got a job at the airport ... but from age 11 to 16 I was rarely second or worse. Must do the photos some day under the theme "Money can't buy taste." Are we referring to the same place? It's that giant mansion right behind the Inn. No, here in Lorraine at the north west end where huge houses have been going up... I used to play in those fields, there was a decent packed earth bike path... lauched rockets, built and fired tenis ball cannon's, etc. A trib of the dog river (where you used to skate?) had some of the nastiest snapping turtles you can imagine. Then you'd hit thicker woods. Just to the west of that was a little pond. We skated there. Gotcha. Never skated there, used the municipal rinks... There was a small pond rink in the woods near Lacasse convenience store, we played hockey a bit in there... Cheers, Alan -- --e-meil: there's no such thing as a FreeLunch.-- |
