You really should insure them. If you are not shooting commercially, then
household and personal belongings insurance should do it. If you are
commercial then you need commercial insurance, but it covers a lot more.

You have to be bit careful with household insurance. Although the maximum
total cover may seem okay, they may have a limit on individual items, and
they may call a camera kit one item. Check their policy, and get
additional cover if needed.

Yes i know someone who got screwed on a £2000 limit per item. His broker
argued that a lense was seperate but the company argued "shoot pictures with
just the body do ya?"

Anything of real value to you should be specified in your insurance.

As we used to say at jessops "buy the new for old policy then when a better
model comes out just drop the thing and then pop along to us with you
insurance vouchers and get a brand spanking new up to date model"

Sorry to hear about the theft. Frederick is correct - most household
insurance policies limit the amount of coverage and subject you to a
deductible. A better option would be to purchase a "Floater" to your
policy for valuable articles (jewelry, Cameras, golf clubs etc.).
Camera equipment is usually very reasonable to insure this way and ,
there is no deductible.

What ****es me off is that the thief will probably get £500 for the lot if
he's lucky and then he'll probably stick that in his arm. I would alert the
police and then start scouting all the pawn brokers, cash converters, 2nd
hand stockists etc. Jessops regularly got circulars saying "if someone
matching this description..... sells you a product X please call this
number.. he stole it."

I bought a rucksack to stash my entire stock in. Only i never leave the
house with it. There is also a beautifully lit bmw showroom not far from me
but i'll be damned if i'll go anywhere near it at night with my equipment
unless i have someone extremely large and unpleasant looking go with me.

Some people might think that the forces of natural justice were at work
here.

A rich Westerner, who slum-tours one of the poorest countries on earth
carrying equipment equivalent to many years wages for a wretched

indigenous
labourer, gets relieved of his treasured possessions.

India is no where near the poorest counties on earth and you are
showing typical western thinking with that statement. Nor is theft
any form of natural justice. A more correct form of natural justice is
the death of thieves.

More to the point, death to politicians!

lots of people are losing their jobs to india based call centres.
Personally a more balanced world economy would stop this.

Mind you there wouldn't be so many cheap holidays. ;P

Look, In Poland where I live this it is a earnings of medicine doctor,
teacher or normal worker for around 3 years.
Please don't tell me about Robin Hood, because for me it seems to be
poorer than most of Indian tourists I met.
It was allmost all I have had, in my country no company wanted to
insurance it.
Now I am a bankrupt.

Maybe you know where to insurance that kind of equipment in England for
example?

More balanced in the sense of "Rich countries get richer, poor
countries get poorer"?

Not to mention other items we like to buy without spending a fortune.

Tashi, please accept my sincere apology for the comments of one fool. He
does not represent the group. The loss would be devastating to any of us.

If you reside in the UK, France, Spain, or Germany at least part time, then
there are companies that will insure your equipment. If you are able to
replace what you lost, see any insurance agent that sells business
insurance.

Are you a commercial photographer? Were you on assignment when the theft
occurred? If you do work for any major international publisher or news
agency, they might be able to help you obtain financing to replace the lost
equipment and/or insurance to protect the new equipment in the future.

I would also encourage you to look on eBay for replacement equipment.
Everything you lost can be purchased used on eBay, except for the body. It
is too new to find used bodies yet.

Good luck.

Walt Hanks
