Canon s1 IS -- Fantastic
"Jerr" wrote in message hlink.net...
just got this for my wife and it'san amazing camera for the money...got lowest internet price of $395 matched by staples. also picked up 1 gig high speed 45X cf card from newegg for $190. the camera shoots spectacular photos the 10X zoom is incredible. video is like shooting with a high end sony. this one combined with our new teeny-tiny contax sl300rt with the carl zeiss lens gives us all we need. Yes indeed, just got mine yesterday and am thrilled because it's even better than expected. I had used a Canon S100 for the last almost 5 years and had loved it. Then I was seriously considering a Nikon 5700, but luckily learnt about this model and ordered it! The pictures are fantastic, video great, standard batteries and storage cards, great auto features, all kinds of manual controls also available and very intuitive controls. I feel like I've owned the camera for a much longer time already! Don't sweat the fact that it's only about 3 Mega Pixels, photos are just too good, except for some higher contrast in some photos. I'm happy because I was considering a 5 MP camera otherwise! I ordered mine for a total cost of $399 from www.butterflyphoto.com, I wanted to put in a good word for them because of their great service! I also ordered the Rayovac 15 minute batteries and charger (I-C3) from Walmart.com, best prices! I ordered the original case (psc-70) for this camera from inoax.com, best price! And I ordered the Magicstor 2.2 GB CF II card (GS1022C) from computergiants.com for $156 delivered! All in all a great package, now I'm selling my Canon Digital Elph S100 and my Sony TRV-310 Digital camcorder because I don't need them anymore! Let me know if anyone has any questions! |

Hi Manu, When you get your psc-70 case, please let me know it there's enough room for spare batteries and an extra CF card. Also, what kind of strap does it have? I heard it doesn't have a neck or shoulder strap which is a problem because there's no where to put the case while you're shooting pictures. (I don't wear belts so a belt loop is useless to me.) Please let me know what you think about it because I'm considering a smaller camera case for my day trips. I bought a medium sized case that has plenty of padding, and holds my lens cloths and blower, Panasonic travel battery recharger, 2 spare sets of batteries, extra CF cards, camera manual, and CF card reader (it's a thin, fist-sized, compact one that plugs directly into my USB port). Though I like keeping all this stuff together and taking it all on a trip, I don't need to take everything when I just go out for just a few hours. I also have another question for you -- really just curious about it more than anything. Wouldn't you have been better off getting a high-speed CF card? It seems like downloading 2 GB of data to your computer would take a while longer with the slower card. Or does it not really make a difference? Renee |

Renee I'll answer your other question about the case as soon as I get it, but regarding the CF II, I know it's a Microdrive but I ordered it because of how cheap it is compared to high speed Type I cards. I read several websites (one was particularly good, but I can't remember what it was!) and came to the conlusion that most Microdrives are quite comparable to higher speed CF Type I cards, here's one comparison, although it doesn't talk about the Magicstor one specifically: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ I'll be doing a practical test soon and can report back if my conclusion was accurate at all! Also currently I'm using an older 256 MB Lexar card and it performs quite well, no need to get a high speed card just for video, and it's quite ok transferring data to the computer IMO! |

Found some family pictures some guy shot with this camera at
http://www.ferg.us/ It's a nice slideshow. Look under "2004 Disney World". They look much better than his pictures from previous years shot with an Olympus. They give a good representation of what this camera can do for the average person. (I think this guy is average but I don't know him personally.) I don't see any of the purple fringing or noise in them that some people keep talking about in this newsgroup, though I really don't have a professional eye for these things. Also, from my own experience, I haven't run into it myself. So far I've taken lots of pictures of flowers at the botanical gardens, both close-ups and landscapes, the zoo, and friends and family shots in- and outdoors, on both sunny and overcast days. The flip-out, rotating LCD helped me take some really low, close shots of some low growing flowers in my flower bed. I love the zoom. I've taken some beautiful, close shots of red cardinals in my yard that I never would have gotten otherwise. Maybe my pictures are not all works of art in the professional sense, but I'm so pleased with them. I haven't taken any night shots yet, but judging from this man's night time photos, there doesn't seem to be a problem. His fireworks shot looks great. Good to know since the Fourth of July is just around the corner. I'm waiting to see how the camera is going to perform at the beach, but I think that taking good beach scenes is probably a challenge for any camera user. Check out IMG_3588 (tree with sky in background). Lots of purple fringing there -- and that is where it often shows up. Most shots are real nice, though. Are you sure these were taken with an S1 IS? Seems like he is up to almost 4000 shots and the camera was released fairly recently. Phil Phil |

And there's only 88 of them. Where did you get the number 4000? I don't mind you enlightening me about where to find purple fringe, because I really am just an amateur. I look forward to developing a more critical eye for these things. Are there any other photos out of his batch of 88 where you see it? (I really didn't check ALL his photos, myself.) If not, then 1 out of 88 sounds like a good ratio to me. If there are, let me know where, and I'll go back through my own shots that might be similar to see where I've overlooked it. Renee |

Purple fringing seems to occur most prominently when trees and such are shot against a light sky. Good test situation. But overall, an impressive collection of shots. And I was able to verify it is an S1 IS. Phil |

I suppose there are other cameras that might have been able to handle that tree shot a little better. Not a problem for me -- I haven't had the purple fringing yet, and think that it's only going to be a rare occurrence for me when it does happen. Knowing when it's prone to happening is a help, because I might be able to take a couple shots at different resolutions to diffuse the problem. Renee P.S. There's another gallery of S1 IS samples, if anyone is interested. http://ritchie.smugmug.com/gallery/96167/1/3878259 |
